Ques about sales @ Babies R Us & nursery furniture

Hoping some of you second (and third, and fourth and . . .) timers can provide insight here. Thanks in advance!

We went to Babies R Us and Target last weekend to look at nursery furniture. We went to a few stores yesterday and back to BRU to again look at crib & dresser we liked last weekend. We are both really like the Sorelle Chandler Classic crib & dresser.

First question:
Hubby asked last night if we should go on and buy the furniture.

Last weekend, all cribs & furniture were 15% off at BRU. That sale ended on 6/30. Yesterday, I noticed that the current sales 10% off. Is it likely that the sale will go back to 15% off (or higher) in the future? If we buy now and it goes on a better sale, does BRU refund the difference?

Second question:
The set we're looking at offers a crib, a 3-drawer dresser with changing table topper, and a taller, 4-drawer chest of drawers. Are all 3 pieces needed? I'm leaning towards no, but would like to hear from you.

  • Haven't bought nursery furniture but I can tell you that if you go into BRU when it is dead (late night) and get a great sales person, they will give you all kinds of discounts. Plus, open up a loyalty card because it should give you an extra percentage off.

Also, worst case scenario, ask for the sale price at 15% off... All they can do is say no.

First when you register, babies r us will give you a 20% off coupon 6 weeks before your due date to close out your registery. Plus they will price match and honor competitors coupons. So personally, I would wait. (That's what I'm doing anyway)

As for all three pieces, I do think it's excessive right now, but if your crib converts into a full size bed, your teenager would probably need the dresser and chest.
  • A few months ago, when I was pregnant before my mc, target had an amazing sale on nursery furniture so dh and I went ahead and bought it. In glad we did because that set is sold out now and that's what we really wanted. We got all the pieces and I love it. I knew no one would buy us the furniture because it's expensive and heavy and we'd be buying it ourselves eventually anyways.
  • We ordred our crib from walmart.com since they were literally the only store to ship to Hawaii. We bought a 6-drawer dresser,4-drawer armoir and a nightstand from a cheaper "warehouse" supplier that was just the same color. Baby furniture is ridiculously over priced.
  • You can use non-expired 20% bed bath and beyond coupons at babies R us, as long as the item you are buying is not on sale (you would need one coupon for each item you purchase). I plan to use them next week when I go to buy my furniture.

I think the answer to your second question depends on how you plan to handle LO's clothes. We have a changing table that you later flip over and reverse the drawers to be a small dresser. But for the most part, we hang the kids clothes in the closet. I found that it is easier to sort them by size and season when they are hanging. And you can see everything better than when they are in piles in drawers. So, our changing table/dresser really just holds extra diapers/wipes, pajamas, and linens/changing pad covers/burp cloths/etc.

The other issue you may run into is wear and tear. Some people have kids who chew and teethe on their cribs (and maybe other furniture?) and so you may not really want to be investing in what you might think is lifetime furniture but ends up being rough looking in a few years. My kids aren't furniture chewers, but I guess you have no way of knowing what your experience will be (though I recommend not leaving them in their crib to chew on it).
  • I would say if you have a closet you don't need both dressers, we purchased a 5 drawer dresser and 4in 1 crib. I can't what until it arrives.

Thank you all for your input! Here is update from our end:
We are planning on using this furniture for baby & toddler stages, but don't expect it to last through the teenage years. @kdoak2015, we also talked about drawer space and neither one of us used 2 dressers as kid/teens...just one plus the closet. I didn't think about arranging clothes in closet by size, but that's a good idea, @LC122! I arrange by season, but that's more appropriate when everything is same size.
@BostonBaby1, great idea. Maybe Hubbs & I can go by late one night this week to try & score discounts. I usually avoid salespeople because I hate feeling hassled or pressured. The couple of times we've been in BRU, they were busy. I was thankful everyone was tied up and we were never approached.
@BellaM110 - I called our BRU and they do not accept the 20% coupons from Bed, Bath & Beyond. What a bummer! Guess that only happens in city's that also have a Buy, Buy Baby. Hope you don't have any problems.
I agree, @amm0512! I think anything baby or bridal is marked up like 200%! As if having a baby wasn't already expensive enough.
So sorry for your loss, @Embuzz247! I'm happy you scored the furniture you love and send prayers for a rainbow baby to sleep there soon.
@EEB88 - glad to hear about completion coupon. I can see using that to pick up odds & ends, but not sure if we can wait for furniture ETA the smiley that fell off. ;)

  • We bought our furniture for our DS from there and I love it! I bought a convertable crib and a 6 drawer long dresser that I use half for the changing table.

When we bought it I used my 20% off coupons I got in the mail for registering there every month. So I bought them each a month apart. I then went on to buy the convertable pieces with coupons later on. Good luck!
  • BRU is not affiliated with Bed Bath & Beyond. That's Buy Buy Baby.

  • Oh no! That really sucks you aren't able to use the Bed bath and beyond coupons at your babies R us! :( I guess they are picky about that at certain stores. I know I shouldn't have a problem at mine cause I've spoken to multiple sales associates about it just to be sure lol
  • we got an awesome deal on our furniture at pottery Barn kids for DD. I don't remember what we paid, but using coupons, the convertible crib and dresser / changing table combo were cheaper at PBK than BRU. I Happened to like the PBK style better too :) we will be using the same set for this baby and will be upgrading DD to bunk beds.
  • I remember someone mentioning a site that had really great deals on nursery furniture and things but I cannot remember for the life of me what it was. I think maybe you mentioned it @BostonBaby1? If you did do you mind sharing again?

Yes you can. BRU will honor competitors coupons!

THIS IS FALSE.  I called our Babies R Us and they do not honor Bed, Beth & Beyond coupons.  Maybe some locations do, but not all.  I am figuring that BRU will accept the BBB coupons IF there is a Buy, Buy Baby in your city as well (which isn't the case for us).

  • I'm not sure if their prices are better, but for the PP that was mentioning it, Wayfair.com has a ridiculously large selection of cribs.

It's a store-by-store case. Some stores in IL do, some don't. It honestly depends on the manager in the store that day.
