Getting pregnant after 8 years of Amethia.

Hi Bumpers!

My husband and I have been together for just over 13 years (married for just under 2 of them). We had a pre-conception visit with our doctor in June. I am now officially off of Amethia (the generic version of Seasonique) after being on it for 8 years. My doctor told me that unless I want multiples, I should wait a good 3 months after being off the pill to before we actively try to get pregnant. He explained that Amethia prevents the ovulation of an egg, so now that I am off of it, I have the chance of being extra fertile and may drop multiple eggs as my body gets used to the hormone change and regulates my cycle to a more normal pattern.

Has anyone had experience with having multiples after Amethia or a similar birth control? I had never heard of it. I trust my doctor, so my husband and I are waiting until October to start trying but I was just wondering about other experiences. Has anyone waited longer than 3 months and still come out with multiples (without it being common in the family)?

    I've no experience with this or ever heard of that possibility. I'm no doctor, but that sounds kind of weird to me. I don't see how coming off of this would be different than normal birth control.

    Have you googled? Asked the pharmacist, maybe?

    I haven't googled, but did ask my general practitioner doctor and one other GYN and they both confirmed that, while it's not a 100% chance, it is indeed a possibility and highly depends on how your body reacts after getting off the hormones. I thought it to be strange but I'm glad I got a warning versus having a random occurrence of triplets my first go around....

    I have no idea what kind of BC she was on, but my friend got surprise pregnant with twins right after stopping her pills. (Twins do not run on either side of their families. Total shock to them.)

    I've read online that it's possible. I was actually reading up on how you can up your chances of twin pregnancies. *shifty eyes* I may or may not really, really want twins... LOL. Of course, that stuff is not for sure but one of the things they mentioned was getting pregnant soon after stopping BCP because of how your body can react (dropping multiple eggs.) But, of course, different BCP aren't totally the same so... 

    I'm obviously not the most qualified person to talk about this. Grain of salt, here. Just saying I've read it. Who knows?

    @jenfarm3, I have constantly said I have wanted twins forever. But now that it COULD be a SLIGHT possibility, the sheer thought of handling two babies scares me. I'm sure if put in that situation, I'd do my best but I no longer yearn for the experience. haha

    Haha. I have two friends with twins, and they both say... one at a time would be highly more ideal. But, of course, they both love their twins like crazy. It's definitely hard. 

    I still want them. I probably won't get them. But I'll still hope... :P

    I find a hard time believing this to be honest. I was on Seasonique and various generic versions (Amethia, Camrese, etc) for years (total of 12 years on BC, probably at least 6 on that one which was the most recent). I stopped taking it at the beginning of  May, and have not ovulated yet, so it definitely did not heighten my fertility immediately off. My first cycle off was anovulatory (confirmed by temping) and I am CD 23 in my 2nd cycle off with no O yet, so total of 60+ days off that pill with no O. So while my experience may not be universal I did not experience what your doctor said and have never heard that, so I am skeptical. 

    Before I went off this pill, I specifically asked my doctor about what I should expect coming off and was not told anything of that sort. I was just recommended to wait for my first spontaneous period off BCP before trying.

    @peppers1227, glad to know the warning I got doesn't seem to be "the norm." After some google searches, it doesn't seem the internet, as a whole, is too keen on believing the "multiple birth after BC" idea. It is a rather interesting idea though.
