Products to use that are safe

hi girls! I am pregnant with my first 5 weeks & 3 days due March 1st. I was aware of most of the foods to stay away from during pregnancy but never really thought about all the products that I use daily that may not be best to use. Products such as my face wash w/ salicylic acid etc. have you all found products that you like to use that are safe. Looking for help finding shampoos, deodorant & face wash. Thanks!!

Re: Products to use that are safe

  • I wouldn't worry about shampoo. If you are, just use ones that are Sulfate and paraben free. I also don't worry about deodorant. I did with my first and it was a mess. I tried a dry kind from lush and it was disgusting and didn't work.

I was super bummed when I first saw the salicylic acid thing in a thread, but I stumbled upon this little nugget of wonderful news from a dermatologist writing for BabyCenter.com --

High doses of the acid in its oral form have been shown in studies to cause birth defects and various pregnancy complications.

Again, doctors are being cautious by recommending that pregnant women avoid the topical use of salicylic acid. Small amounts applied to the skin — such as a salicylic acid-containing toner used once or twice a day — are considered safe, says Johnson.

But the concern is stronger about face and body peels containing salicylic acid. "This kind of 'soaking' in the ingredient is similar to taking one or more aspirin when pregnant," she explains.

  • Ok great! Thank you all!!
  • I use Beautycounter for all of my skincare, body care, and cosmetics. All of their products are a 2 or below on the EWG skindeep scale (meaning they are non-toxic) and they ban close to 1,600 ingredients in all of their products. They are really concerned about safety which is why I switched over everything earlier this year because I knew we would be trying to get pregnant this summer and all of the products are safe for baby and pregnant mamas. Shoot me an email if you were curious about anything (beautycounterbybirgit@gmail.com)!

  • I switched to Arbonne's deodorant, and I've been pleasantly surprised! It's totally fine for work, and for days I'll be outside and sweating a lot I pat some baby powder over it after I apply, because it can be a little sticky at first.

I also have been using the Belli anti-acne kit for a few days, and the spot treatment seems to be pretty effective. I was disappointed after getting the face wash though because it is not oil free, which is usually crucial for me. I might switch to Cetaphil cleanser and pull the Belli back out if I get dry or in the winter.

Also bought some Zoya nail polish. Guess I'm a product junkie looking for an excuse to buy! :) Still searching for a safe toner.
  • Honestly throughout my pregnancies I haven't changed products and my boys all came out perfect.  With that being said, the products I use are Dove deodorant, Biolage shampoo/conditioner, Burt's Bees body wash and face soap.  I make my own coconut oil/shea butter lotion.  I use Ulta eye shadow (and I can't remember the mascara brand I use).

  • I also did not change any of my products with my first DD and she 100% healthy. I will not change any of my products this time around either. I use Dove deodorant, Arbonne mascara, maybeline products, suave etc. I believe as long as you don't sniff bleach you should be just fine....
