Nontraditional...

We purchased our first piece of furniture for the nursery this weekend. Call me crazy but nothing about a matching white 3 piece set from Buy Buy Baby appeals to me. We are planning a tribal/wilderness theme. Think forest animals, arrows, aztec prints, and tepees. I envision a room full of unique pieces that tell a story. It's been such a fun way to pass the weeks and bond with my husband. Anyone else planning a non-traditional nursery? If so any tips on places you may be shopping?

Love it! This sounds very similar to the nursery I'm planning actually! We're doing a woodland creature theme/Moonrise Kingdom/Fantastic Mr. Fox style. I really like Wes Anderson's vintage style mixed with childhood wonder. I'm mostly finding decor, art, and mobiles on Etsy that fit my theme. Some stuff on Land of Nod, but that stuff is pricy.

  • I'm going non-traditional too. I'm not into cutesy nurseries, themes, or even matching color schemes... We are keeping it super simple with a little grey and yellow, but mostly white, wood (floor, trim, crib) and neutrals.
    Happy planning!!
  • Love the ideas ladies! I haven't even thought about a nursery theme yet but am hoping to go a little non traditional:)
  • DD's room is made up of mismatched furniture. The only newish thing in her room is the crib. There is a Queen spare bed in there, a 3-drawer dresser that I've had for years that has her changing pad on top, two side tables that my grandfather made and I've had since almost when I was born (one holds the diaper organizer and wipes), and the swivel/glider that DH had before I met him.

  • I love that you are going non traditional Just my 2cents. If you aren't planning on buying "baby" furniture, make sure to secure pieces to the wall. Some antique or older pieces, new prices that aren't specific to kids, even if they seem heavy can topple over once baby is mobile and climbing. Especially pieces that are raised on sort of skinny legs, it doesn't have the stability.
I remember reading an article by a mother that lost her daughter due to an accident where the chest of drawers in the girls room fell on top of her. I cried for days after reading that. Then went and bought anchors for the bookcases I had refinished and put in my daughters room.
Sorry to be a Debbie downer.

I agree the matching 3 piece set wasn't for me either. Especially since the furniture is expensive and all mini sized and won't be forever items. We ended up buying a long dresser this weekend from a thrift store that we love. We spent the weekend painting it white with a dark brown top. We are planning on finding some new handles for it too to make it unique. So far it has come out great! I can't wait to find the rest of the pieces!
  • Going very simple and neutral over here..not really think "nursery" in my mind..more just..baby's room
  • The woodland/outdoorsy theme seems to be very popular right now. I found some great stuff on Pinterest when I was planning on going a similar direction. We're still doing woods/nature but more subtle. Colors mint, coral, and gray.

OP - I love that dresser! We're repurposing an antique chest of drawers we already had for storage/changing table. I'll defiantly be bolting the thing to the wall now...
  • We go very non traditional. No nursery! Lol! Ours room in for the first year and then transfer to a toddler bed around 18m in the boy/girl bedroom depending on gender. We've never had issues, it worked with our first four!
  • Great piece, love it! I'm shooting for a modern, non-matchy nursery also.
  • I totally agree with the non traditional nursery. Are those lamps for the nursery too? Am I the only person that looked at them and thought omg not baby proof? lol. If those are the lamps (totally fit your vision btw) I would just make sure they are positioned so LO once mobile can't pull them down. They look like very heavy marble bases and pointy curves to me (sorry mom in me is going eek)
  • I love color, so I'm looking for bright, bold pieces that can be easily mixed/matched and switched out. I've been on Pinterest for weeks looking for inspiration (@abeautifulvida if anyone else is on there!), and haven't really found anything I love.

Just a tip: rugsusa.com has amazing sales and tons of kids rugs as well as rugs that would absolutely work in a nursery - I've bought from them before and am so happy with what they offer. I have a few options saved and am waiting until the anatomy scan confirms my genetic testing before I buy anything!

  • I'm going completely non traditional.  A lot of my friends are giving me furniture....so lots of hand me downs.  Old white antique baby dresser, darker wood crib, along with an older rocking chair.  I don't want a super matchy/matchy themed room.  I'm just grateful for the help from my friends so I'm not picky.
