way too hot

It is 84° inside my house I have no a/c, constant fans runinng. I've eaten nearly a whole box of popsicles myself, generally due to being so hot I don't wear much while home, I've been drinking enough to keep me in the bathroom every five minutes ( Thanks to LO sitting against my bladder) and yet I feel dehydrated and the is sucking the life out of me...... what can i do to cool down?

Re: way too hot

  • Cold shower? Sorry. That sounds miserable!
  • Loading the player...
  • Get an old school ice pack and alternate placement between lower back (cooling near your kidneys) or back of the neck. I do this for pain sometimes and always need a blanket!
  • Go to a 24 hour Home Depot and buy a portable air-conditioning machine if you can afford it (they are having a sale.) Or, if it's very humid, buy a dehumidifier.

Do you not have an AC? I would go somewhere that does and hang out there. I'm from the south and air conditioning is a MUST. But even when that's not enough I take a cold shower.

ETA: sorry I guess my reading skills are lacking tonight....I see now where you say you have no AC.
  • Thanks ladies, I'll try anything at this point!!!! LO is not liking the heat so I'm feeling very sick today. Cold shower and ice packs sound heavenly.
  • Try some peppermint oil on your neck. It actually helps bring your body temp down and cool you off. I can't imagine no AC! Yikes. Even with AC its deathly here in South Florida.
  • Our AC unit for our townhouse died 2 weeks ago and we can't afford the repairs so we ended up buying 2 of these that we've been taking room to room with us because my body temp was raising too high like I had a fever and my midwife said it wasn't safe at all. They get really cold and help a lot, and I live in the southwest so it gets up to 120 here during the days.

  • You are at Carson, correct? If you're on post there should be a swimming pool around! :) If you're off post maybe catch up with a buddy and hit the pool? Going to the pool is the only thing that cools me off. There's also these really neat neck things (idk the technical term) at Walmart or target. It's filled with gel and sooo amazing!
  • Looks like I'll be taking a trip to Wal-Mart :) and yes I'm on Carson, but last time i went to the pool there were tons of wild kids splashing around and I got hit in the stomach a few times :/ thinking of buying my own little pool for the backyard. Thanks for all the tips ladies I've been laying in front of the fan with cool washcloths over me for most of the evening, LO is in a better mood and wriggling around like crazy.
  • Yes I'm also dying in the heat and I think I will buy a portable a/c this week. There are also "cooling" cloths at Costco that stay cold longer than towels or wash cloths. I have two cool baths a day lol.
  • You're doing what's needed! Very little to no clothes and no activity.
  • I'm sorry you have to deal with this! Our AC died a couple weeks ago.. it was the longest two days of a house between 95-107 degrees! I ate a ton of Popsicles and wore basically nothing, and sat with a fan directly next to me. At night, my husband kept putting cold towels on me while he thought I was sleeping.. it helped a little! I was so drained just from those couple days, so i can only imagine how you feel! I say just use as many fans as possible, and try to keep the blinds down (we even covered the ones that the afternoon sun beat through with dark sheets and towels) so the sun can't heat up the house as much! And if you can, try to go somewhere with AC for a few hours during the hottest part of the day to cool down your body temp! Hang in there!
