Baby won't stop crying when trying to burp

My 7 wks old is formula fed and takes about 5oz every 4 hours. Lately, his new thing is to scream and cry after we take the bottle away to burp him. We try to burp him every oz but he makes it so hard. Not sure if I should try the drops for gas or if this is a normal issue. Has anyone else had to deal with this or know f any ideas?

Re: Baby won't stop crying when trying to burp

  • They are just mad they have to stop eating.  My breastfed piglet is the same.
  • Loading the player...
  • My lil boo get super mad when I do this as well. I think he's probably just mad bc he want to finish the whole bottle. I only burp him twice at each feeding, at the halfway mark and when he finish.
  • I breastfeed and use a bottle and my porker gets mad too... Even though he was sucking me dry and clearly done after 20 minutes and falling asleep. Lol! My boy usually has a burp or a deeper gas bubble so all you can do is keep burping! Sometimes it takes him the next hour to work everything out. Is his latch ok on the bottle? Sometimes my guy takes in a lot of air or drinks super fast (both bottle and breast). Just a thought! We lay him on his left side on our left arm and pump his right leg or just rub his back. Sometimes we just walk around with him that way for 30 minutes before he works out poop or spit up.
  • Why are you trying to burp after every ounce? I wouldn't think there would be enough air in the belly after just 1 oz. Is that something recommended by your pediatrician?

We follow standard guidelines burping once halfway and again after his bottle. If LO is really hungry he'll fuss halfway through because he wants to keep eating. I think your baby is just hungry!

I only burp dd midfeed if she starts to fuss because it usually means that she has to, i thing your lo is just frustrated, honestly i would cry too if you took my food away 3 times every meal lol but i know burping is good for the baby specially when bottle fed, so maybe just burp him once in the middle? That's what i always read
  • I EBF but DS does the same thing. I try to burp him and then offer the breast again. He usually cries during the first burping time because he's still hungry. Then he cries after we finish feeding too. Only for a short while though.

I feel awful when he cries during burping and I never know if he wants to eat more. Sometimes I'll even offer the breast a third time. Very rarely does he take it and lately he even refuses the second time it's offered.

But I sympathize with you. It's an awful feeling when they cry during burping time.
  • Try burping halfway through and then after. That should be enough. My DS does the same thing though lol

I find that when he gets that upset it makes the gas worse because he's swallowing air as he screams. What has worked for me is laying him face down across my lap, so his belly is on my knee, and burping him this way. He seems to calm down enough to get a good burp and then continue feeding.
  • We had to change formulas because of this issue and have seen a lot of success since moving to a gentle formula
  • My son does the same thing, he just gets mad that the bottle is gone and he has to burp within the past week or so he has gotten better and used to the fact that he needs to burp and then gets the bottle back
