High blood pressure at 16 weeks

so my doctor didn't seem overly concerned yet but she got me worried. My 16 week appointment my blood pressure was 140/60. Last visit it was 130/70. Any thoughts? She said if it stays high later on they'll start to worry about it.... Help settle this mama down

Re: High blood pressure at 16 weeks

  • My first apt I was 132/70, my last apt I was 137/80. I always have Hbp when at the docs and normal at home. I wouldn't worry to much about it, they will just monitor it closely.

  • My blood pressure has been high since the day I found out I was pregnant. My doctor has been monitoring it and he is pretty concerned thinking he will need to put me on meds at my 16w appointment.

I'm trying to go the natural route in the meantime by using an essential oil that helps with blood pressure. So far it has lowered my BP a lot. I'm now down to 140/70 from my 9w appointment when it was 170/80ish! My doctor was thrilled that it's come down but says second trimester can cause even higher BP so the 16w appointment will be the determining factor.

All I know is that your doctor wouldn't let you leave if you or baby were in any danger. If he is monitoring you then he will definitely keep a close eye to make sure you get intervention if you need it. In the meantime the best you can do is relax and don't let yourself stress out about it!

If you know anything about essential oils the one that has lowered my BP is ylang-ylang. It could be something to look into!

    Prayers for you and baby!

  • Cutting your sodium intake will also help lower your blood pressure. You can pick up a cheap cuff at Walgreens if you want to check it at home and keep a diary to take to your appointments as well

  • My doctor told me that they are more concerned with the bottom number and I think 70 is perfect also check it at home or drug store where you may not be quite as nervous white coat syndrome is a real thing
  • I have high blood pressure, it's genetics for me. I usually run 130/80 or so, but that's my normal. So wait and see if it's a pattern. Right now my Dr is just keeping an eye on it but isn't concerned.
  • This whole pregnancy my BP has been more on the low side (still normal range I believe?) of 90/60
  • I am on bp meda now my bp spiked during first tri- I monitor it at home and see a MFM for it. I'm considered "high risk" because of it. The numbers you are watching out for are 150 and 100. They don't want your bp up over those numbers. Hell my OB would be thrilled if my bp was what yours was! Relax until there's something to stress about mama!
  • I have had high BP, 140/70 for three weeks in a row (I'm 17 weeks now). The doc put me on BP meds and my headaches have decreased substantially and I have to go in every week for monitoring.
  • Others have mentioned most of the basics. However, I wanted to add illness and stress can increase blood pressure too. So, if you are feeling under the weather or thought you were going to be late to your appointment it could be higher than it normally would be but the effect could be temporary.
  • I don't typically get HBP until later in pregnancy but I am on low dose aspirin to help keep it down.  It is typically the lower number they look at.  120/80 is the average BP for adults so 70 is actually on the lower side.  When it gets to be in the 90's and higher is when it is a concern.  Looks like you number isn't overly high so try to keep calm, especially when at the doctors office.

Taking BP meds is not a big deal either though.  I took them at the end of my last pregnancy and just remember that you are taking them to keep baby safe.

Good luck and I hope it comes out lower your next appointment.
