Calories/weight gain/venting *sigh*

at my first appointment my dr only wanted me to gain 25lbs (with my last I gained 40!) so I was super nervous and up until 20 weeks I gained 10lbs (which she didn't seem to care much) I told her I was trying to stay on track with the weight and I've been tracking calories for sodium purposes and I can only eat 1700 a day. She said I could eat more. Low & behold I upped it to right under 2000 & gained another 9lbs (in 4 weeks) she made my weight gain a HUGE deal at my 24 week check up, I'm almost 26 1/2 weeks now & I just feel like I can't enjoy my pregnancy because of the fact she made a big deal about it & now all I can think about is not gaining weight plus I'm retaining so much freaking water that Lol Am I over exaggerating? Should I be that meticulous with calories? Or is this preggo paranoia? Thanks for letting me vent.. It helps just getting it out there! Lol

  • Everyone is different!  My friend gained 80lbs when she was pregnant and she is just a little thing!

  • @roboytoh thank you! That's what my husband keeps saying & I'm hormonal and tell him he just doesn't understand! Lol oh boy...
  • Sorry to hear your stressed about weight gain I think we are all a little nervous about gaining too much. I was just thinking today I wonder how many calories we should be eating daily I know they usually say 200-300 more than normal but what is considered normal? 2000? Try to stay active and eat healthy foods and I am sure you will be okay :) hang in there!
  • I've gained nearly 20 pounds at 25 weeks and my doctor has not said a single word about it. Doesn't seem concerned.
  • Thank you guys for the encouragement! I really appreciate it!!
  • I've gained 20lbs and doc was concerned. She only wanted me to gain 25lbs total for pregnancy. But from hearing other moms talk 35-45lbs gained was the norm. So I'm not to worried. Just don't overindulge and keep active!
  • I am actually still down a couple of pounds from my pre pregnancy weight. Thanks to constantly feeling sick. My dr wants me to only gain 10-15 pounds at this point (told at my 22 week appointment) I feel like since I usually have 8+ pound babies that once this LO really starts to grow I can basically only gain a couple of pounds because she is going to account for most of my allowed weight gain. Gaining too much weight has never been an issue but now I feel paranoid about it. Ugh!!
  • I've gained 22lbs at 26 weeks and my doctor is totally fine with it. Like a pp said, my doctor says as long as I'm making wise choices and not binging on fast food, then it's all good.

I know I'd be really upset, too, if I was being so meticulous with my intake and my doctor gave me a hard time. I think some of us will just gain more and some will gain less. Our bodies do what they want! Try to enjoy and not stress out too much over weight.

  • I'm sorry you have this stress on you, along with all the other stressors of pregnancy. I've found that this period in pregnancy is when I've gained a lot of weight and fast. As long as you know you're making healthy choices and being active, I think that's all that should matter - not what the scale says (isn't that how it always should be in life?).

My Dr said to just think "does the baby need this or not" before I eat it. And that's it. He said he wants me to enjoy my pregnancy, because stressing over food intake isn't any better for baby, and nobody can live on salad alone. And he said bacon is ok lol.

Chin up and don't let one persons opinion get you down!
  • It's so hard to see your weight go up when we live in such a body conscious society. I think you have to balance keeping a good mental attitude (I am supposed to be gaining some weight) without over-indulging / eating for two. Personally, I would recommend against counting calories, as it might force you to either eat more or less than you need on a given day - your needs may vary with how much exercise you're getting or how much the baby is growing at that time, and in my view it's healthier to try to eat when you're hungry and stop when you're full than limit yourself to a particular number of calories (or force yourself to keep eating to reach that number).

As PPs have said, most of what I've read and the doctor/midwives have told me is to just make sure you're eating a variety of healthy foods and getting some exercise and not to focus on the weight gain, as that will vary by person pretty widely. If you feel you're eating good food and not indulging all the time (occasional treats are fine!) and staying active then you shouldn't have anything to worry about.
  • @bethforeman I gained 59 lbs my first pregnancy and lost every bit of that weight plus more after having my son !! I'm 25 weeks and I gained 23 lbs so far, my Dr won't put me on a diet unless I get GD or high BP !
  • Thank you everyone! I feel so much better! :x
  • My dr. Recommended 15-25 lbs as well. At my last appt. (23 weeks) I had already gained 20 lbs. But my dr. said my weight gain looked fine. Still - I've been trying to eat a little better and be more active, but not necessarily counting calories, and allowing myself some indulgences.

27 weeks and I've gained about 27-30 lbs next appointment is the 9th but last time I went she didn't even bring up my weight. Sorry your doctor is pressuring you about it! Honestly everyone is different and even the things doctors think they know isn't definitive for everyone. Just make good choices and don't stress, gotta be happy for baby! :)
  • My doctor said it best...every pregnancy is different and you can have guidelines but not drive yourself crazy. Don't eat for two but do eat extra, you're growing a human afterall!
  • I'm only 23 weeks and have gained 25 pounds! I exercise 6-7 days a week and eat healthy with the occasional treat* none of the doctors in my practice have brought up my weight until I did. I am obsessed with it to the point that I get on the scale 5 times a day!! (Sick I know!) pre pregnancy weight was 135 and seeing 160 on the scale freaks me out especially since I have a good amount to go! Your not alone in the struggle but if you are doing what is recommending (eating healthy and exercising) there is nothing we can do- our bodies are making little humans!

You sound just like me !!!! I am constantly weighing myself and making an issue over my weight to the dr but he continuesly tells me I'm fine .... Lol
  • I think it was unfair of your doc to make such a big deal out of your weight. Without knowing your background, I do know many women struggle with weight. Pregnancy makes us even more vulnerable. Why is she so concerned? I Told my doc from the beginning that I didn't want to worry about my weight and that I also didn't want to weigh myself or know my weight through the entire pregnancy. She has been really understanding so far.

Thank you! I lost all of my baby weight with my 2nd, it took longer than I would've liked but I did it. Lol & my blood pressure is great, they're not worried about preeclampsia or anything else. But being pregnant & having to talk about your weight gain with another individual isn't the easiest thing to. Maybe I'll talk to her about not talking about my weight gain too!
  • I've changed doctors a few times but none of them have been really concerned with my weight but I have been. They have all said gain the 35 to 45 pounds eve. Though I am obese because of my height. I initially I lost weight but I have just passed my pre pregnancy weight by 19 pounds at 24 weeks. I'm interested to know what the new doctor will say. I would say don't let them make you crazy unless it's something serious.
  • @bethforeman if your BP is good and you don't have any other health concerns your dr shouldn't have a say in your weight ! I wouldn't stress over it !

I was JUST coming on here b/c I was feeling crappy about my weight gain. I'm seeing now this is a normal concern. I feel like it's all relative. Now I'm realizing I'm ONLY up 14 pounds at 23w3d.

I'm feeling yucky bc I gained 7 of those pounds within the past 3w, and I'm finally out of my normal clothes. But I guess what do I expect?!

    Stay healthy lovelies.
  • My doctor said something kinda funny to me at my last appointment. I barely gained anything the first 20 weeks and then gained a pound a week in the last 4 weeks. I was a little shocked so I asked if I needed to cut back on the ice cream. My doctor said "we all get to 20-35lbs someway, try not to gain more then two lbs a week from here on out". To me that seems reasonable:)
