TMJ during pregnancy

Has anyone developed TMJ or had jaw pain during pregnancy?? I have never had issues with clenching/grinding or had symptoms of TMJ but starting about 1-2 weeks ago my jaw has been aching and popping especially when I eat (35 weeks pregnant now). I know that hormones produced during pregnancy loosen muscles/joints in the body and I'm hoping it could just be due to that and resolve on its own. Before moving a few months ago I actually worked reception at a dental office but we referred most TMJ patients out to a specialist so I don't know too much about it but most likely a dentist would just recommend a night guard at first to see if that helps. I'll ask my OB at my next appointment and call my dentist if it gets worse but I'm just curious to see if anyone else has expirienced this, I can't seem to find a lot of information linking it to pregnancy.

  • I haven't had TMJ issues while pregnant but I had them when I was a teenager. My oral surgeon said cutting back on chewing helps relieve the symptoms and can make it go away for a little while. I know that sounds a little ridiculous but what he meant was not chewing bubble gum or tough meat, etc. staying away from foods that require your jaw to do a lot of work. He even put me on a liquid diet for 2 weeks which helped a lot but I don't think it's a good thing to do while pregnant. I hope you feel better!!

  • I had lockjaw a couple weeks ago, not sure why. It went away by the next day and my dr said not to worry! Hope you get to feeling better:)
  • My TMJ actually completely goes away when I'm pregnant because of the relaxin. When not pregnant I have major issues. Unfortunately it's something that will most likely change again soon after pregnancy ends so it might be more of a hassle than it's worth to get it fixed now, might as well wait out the last few weeks and see if it's still bothering you post delivery.

I've had TMJ issues for many years now. It peaked after I delivered my first and then after a few months went back to my "normal". There are many factors that contribute to your TMJ giving you aches, pains and clicking. Try to make sure your sleeping supported all around as that is when most of the damage occurs to the joint. Drink your fluids. Choose foods that do not require a ton of chewing (meat, salad, chewing gum) there are plenty of soft foods. Also avoid over opening your mouth, aka forcing the joint to click. Like you said, you could invest in a night guard or just wait it out and hope it resolves itself post pregnancy. Hope that helps...
  • Not sure if it was TMJ or just jaw pain, but it pretty much went away after a pre-natal massage. It was on the same side as my sciatica/ perifomis pain so I'm certain its related.
  • Oh my goodness I thought I was the only one !! I've never had tmj before but have developed it over the past few weeks. It's accompanied by ear pain too. Blah. Nothing much to be done about it I guess
