Miscarriage/Pregnancy Loss

Doctors don't have answers!!!!

hey everyone, I'm a total mess today and I don't know how to get through the next day. So here is my story.... Hcg levels were check 3 times, first was 41, then99, then 70 on Thursday. Doc said I was going to MC so I elected to take Cytotec so I could be in control and hopefully be done over the weekend. So I took Cytotec on Friday, nothing happened no bleeding just cramping, took a 2nd dose Saturday and still nothing but light bleeding, anyways I decided to go and see a different obgyn today. When I saw the second obgyn today they said they couldn't believe I was prescribed Cytotec based on Hcg levels alone (no us), anyways they did an us and retook my blood today. Ultrasound look like a possible epotopic so they wanted to retake my blood, turned out my Hcg levels doubled!!!!!! They have no idea and said they have never seen that, because epotopic doesn't have that much increase in Hcg. Anyways I'm devestated because what if it's a viable pregnancy and I took Cytotec, plus a lot of pain meds!!!! Plus drank last night (DH and I thought we were going through a MC so a strong drink was called for!) anyways I go back on Thursday, a day away but it seems like a lifetime. WTF is happening!!!!! Has anyone heard of similar experiences???!!!!

Re: Doctors don't have answers!!!!

  • I am so sorry you're going through this.  I have never heard of a situation like that.  How far along were you at that the time when your doctor prescribed you the cytotec?   A couple drinks wouldn't hurt anything, so I wouldn't worry about that aspect of it.  But it is definitely troubling that you could have been prescribed cytotec with a viable pregnancy.  I'm sure the wait is killer -- keep us updated, and in the meantime, I'm sending positive thoughts!

  • I'm so sorry!!!
What happened when u went in Thursday?
  • Well turned out that I had an ectopic pregnancy, however I had an early miscarriage and so it took care of itself naturally. I guess that is very rare and I'm extremely lucky that nothing else happened. They can't completely explain the increase of hcg, but since then my levels have gone down almost to zero and I have had no bleeding since. They did another US and saw nothing so THANKFULLY nothing was in there struggling to survive! The first doctor gave me Cytotec without an ultrasound, I didn't know better and figured my doctor knows best. I'm blessed nothing happened, unfortunately everythingn worked out and I have a NEW doctor that I feel in good hands with! It sucks that we have to wait awhile before trying again, but it could have been a lot worse. It also sucked that I had to take that awful medicine for nothing! I'm not going to lie, it was extremely painful and I felt sick for days after. The lessons learned is to always seek a second opinion, I'm no longer afraid to question doctors!
  • I'm glad it is worked out. Obviously not the result wanted but now u r on the way to be healthy again and try again. :-)
  • Wow that is scary! I can't believe your Dr. didn't give you an US to confirm. At least the diagnosis was correct (sadly). I know I asked for a third US right before my d&c just to triple check. Don't be afraid to ask for further confirmation (hopefully you won't have to) in the future. They are trained doctors, but also human. Take care.
