First trimester weight gain.

Hi Ladies,
Just curious where you guys who are nearing the end of your first trimester are at weight wise...I'm 11w 3d, and this morning I hit the 7 lb mark, which I know is a bit more than where I'm supposed to be (since they reccomended 1-5 lbs first trimester). Just curious and looking to see if I'm "normal" compared to the other pregnant moms!

Re: First trimester weight gain.

  • Zero. I'm down 13 lbs from sickness. Blah!

  • You are perfectly fine! I've gained about 5lbs. Everyone is different :)
  • I'm 10w5d, and I've gained 5 so far. I'm trying not to stress about it, and just survive this trimester!
  • 12w6d and I have lost, but I look like I have gained. Like PP said, everyone carries it different, but make sure are making healthy choices.
  • I've been so sick, I lost weight... But I'll start packing it on now that I'm feeling better. I gained a ton of weight with my son, but I felt great so I never worried about it. Enjoy it, this is the only time where people think our weight gain is cute lol!
  • I lost 11 lbs between weeks 4-13 and now I'm 14 weeks exactly and it looks like I've gained almost 5lbs in a day or two! And I don't think I'm backed up because I've been pretty regular. So now I'm down just 6 lbs
  • 11+1 and I've gained 2 lbs so far. My ob told me 25-30 lbs is my target, but that I don't need to worry about gaining much in 1st tri. After 20w they'll be wanting to see ~1lb/wk.
I think everyone gains differently, but your doctor will tell you if they think you're gaining too much.
  • 13w3d and I've lost 2. Please follow the advice of PPs. There's no use in comparing yourself to others. In my particular case I'm overweight and my doctor wanted me to limit my sugar and would like to see me have a total gain of only 15-25 pounds. Your doctor will let you know if they have concerns.
  • 11w today.  I had lost 4 lbs from food aversions and not wanting to eat.  At my appointment last Tuesday I found I had gained 1 lb back.  So overall I am still down 3 lbs.  You definitely can't tell, though.  My blump makes it look like I have gained at least 10 lbs.

  • At my 11 week checkup I had gained 3.5. I was nervous because I have been eating a LOT due to major hunger! Lol but like many others have said, everyone is so different. As long as you're eating your best (milkshakes and tater tots from sonic are totally ok on my eyes every now and then) ;) then you'll be fine! Enjoy this time.
  • Echoing others, everybody is different! If you're not having nausea or food aversions and feel you could do better with healthy eating, do so, but otherwise eat whatever your body will eat when you're hungry, stop when you're full, and there's not much more you can do. I haven't gained anything yet, but I'm definitely mushy and bloated and LOOK like I've gained 10lbs...I've had some nausea and food aversions, but no vomiting (how most women seem to be losing weight), so I'm holding steady...but I've been living on pasta and ice cream. I asked my OB and he said as long as I'm able to eat during the first trimester, to eat whatever I feel I can stomach, that any food is better than vomiting or starving....he did say once I get to the 2nd trimester and some of those 1st tri symptoms subside I should try to eat more well-rounded, but that my prenatal vitamins (an Rx I've been on since before conceiving to prepare myself) should cover any lack of nutrition meanwhile.

As long as you are able to eat food and keep it down, and the food isn't making you feel gross, keep eating it. Give yourself another month before you start being hard on yourself, 1st trimester is hard :)

I was normal weight to begin with (I'm 5'5" and 132lbs) and was a very healthy eater. The first trimester nausea was awful for me and all I could eat was carbs, which certainly was a change from my normal eating and it seemed like that really put the weight on fast. The bloat hasn't helped either. I just wanted to try and stay on track and stay within the normal weight gain of 25-35 lbs, and it worries me that I'm already ahead of the game! I know it's all for a good reason, I just want stay healthy for the baby and not have a ton to lose later.

As others have said, everyone's different. And while one mom's weight gain might be in the normal range when yours is higher or lower, if you're eating healthier and giving the baby all the important nutrients, you're doing better! I use the Dr Brewer pregnancy diet as a rough guide. I don't follow it perfectly, just make an effort to hit a lot of the foods on it.

But, to answer your question I've gained a pound or two. I'm also weaning my twins now and I had about 5 lbs breastfeeding weight (I lose 1-2lbs whenever they cut back on their nursing) so who knows what if any effect that's had.
  • I've gained one lb so far.

My last pregnancy I gained 55 lbs. I are healthy and exercised, but you'll gain what your body needs to to support a healthy pregnancy. And yes, you will lose the weight! Don't worry about it.
  • I started small (5'3", 108 lbs) and have gained 4 lb so far, at 11w3d. Feels like 14 pounds with all the bloat..! I've mostly wanted crabs and quick meals (burritos etc) so far; am making it a big priority to get back to more balanced, whole foods eating in 2nd tri.
  • @badone we are pretty similar in our pre pregnancy weight. I am 5"5 and weighed 135 before getting pregnant. I was active in my exercise routine and eating healthy but it all changed once I found I was pregnant. I was too tired to workout and my hunger was unreal! I didn't want anything healthy. In fact, my aversions were to everything healthy. All I wanted was carbs and I wouldn't be full until I had them. By 10w I had gained 6 lbs. By 11w I was finally getting back to normal and my hunger wasn't so intense. I was able to start back working out regularly as well and today I'm exactly 12w and I'm only up 5 lbs. Yes, I lost 1 lb since 10 weeks. I'm still eating, but not as much and not as unhealthy and I'm working out 5 days a week. Mostly walking on am incline about 4 miles a day. I'm also carrying twins.

Like the others said, we are all different. No two people are going to gain weight the same. But, I do not agree with people who say just because you're pregnant you can gain as much weight as you want and people will be fine with it. Not true. Complications happen because of it. I ended up with pre eccamplsia with my son and I'm doing my best to not let that happen this time around. The first trimester is super tough so don't beat yourself up. As soon as you're feeling better then you can get on track to eating healthier and exercising. Your body always let's you know what you need.

At 13 weeks, I was up 5.5lbs. At 23 weeks, I'm up 18lbs. I just gained 4lbs in 2 weeks as baby had a growth spurt. It goes like that. Everyone will gain different amounts. You can't compare yourself to others.
  • I'm a big girl to begin with and I'm down 15 from lack of appetite.
  • Down about 10 and I'm "officially" out of the first trimester on Wed. But everyone is different. The books say not to stress two much about a couple of pounds here and there. You might gain less than you're "supposed" to in the second trimester and it will all even out. Just make healthy choices and you'll be fine. :-)

Thanks for the feedback, this is helpful to talk with someone who started out in a similar position! I'm so used to eating very healthy and was weight and health conscious overall. So I think that eating the carbs in and of themselves partially was making me feel sluggish and bloated. I'm trying to get back on track. I will be happy to get our of the first trimester for sure and am looking forward to getting back to walks with my husband. Fruit and Greek yogurt have been my friends recently and it feels good to get some nutritious food back in my diet.
  • Without knowing everyone's starting weight, height, BMI, etc., weight gain is irrelevant. Everyone is different. Last pregnancy I gained 10lbs first tri and ended up gaining only 30 overall. This time I've only gained a couple so far, but actually look bigger in my opinion. First tri is hard, but as long as you eat decently after that you should be fine.
  • I'm 12 weeks tomorrow and I've gained 3 pounds.
  • I'm 13 weeks and I haven't gained anything. I'm already overweight so I'm not "supposed" to gain a lot to begin with. I will say everyone is different. With my son I don't think I gained anything until close to the 3rd trimester, then I gained 20lbs very fast. It's definitely a person to person type thing.

11 weeks here, and I've gained 5lbs.  My BMI was on the lower end to start, so the midwife did not seem concerned.  She stressed that I need lots of calories right now.

  • I'm 10w1day and am a bit heavier to start with than I would have liked. I was lucky and haven't had much MS at all. Somehow the scale hasn't budged a pound but I feel like I have gained at least 10 pounds from bloat and only having an appetite for carbs! Hoping to get back to my workout routine in the next week or two. This mama is ready for her energy to come back!
  • At my appt at 12w1d, I had gained 1lb. Dr is satisfied with that as I am overweight to begin with. She wants me to gain 15-20 lbs max.

  • I am 5'5 and was 124 to start and I am 137.5 today. I KNOW that is more than I am supposed to have gained, however, prior to finding out I was pregnant I was running five miles a day and eating very regimented diet. Mathis is my first pregnancy and as soon as I found out I was pregnant I started eaton normally and stopped running (walking dogs is my exercise these days). I was paranoid I would hurt my baby. I am not so concerned with gaining weight, I am more concerned about a healthy baby and I will start working out post pregnancy.
  • 14 weeks and I have gained 8 lbs. Just worrying a bit. As doctor said to watch my weight.
  • I haven't gained anything and can still comfortably zip and button my pants most days (11w1d). I'm a little taller (5'7", so not super tall or anything) and didn't show until later with DD and DS, too. Gained 20 with DD and was back in my normal pants in 4 weeks. With DS I gained 30 and had 10 pounds that wouldn't budge til he weaned at 15 months. Point being, not only is every woman different, every pregnancy can be, too! Just trying to eat well most of the time and be active and you'll be fine. Don't worry too much about the scale!

  • I'm 14w3d and I've already gained 11 pounds! The dr told me to gain about 40 though cause I was only 90 pounds when I got pregnant. Thank goodnedd I haven't had any sickness!

15wks and I've gained 3lbs so far. I'm surprised because I eat so much, but I also walk a ton so maybe I'm burning off the calories by that.. Not sure, but I'm happy as long as my baby is growing healthy :\">
  • I haven't really paid attention? I know that the number has been going up when I go into the OB but it's not JUMPING up. If they tell me to cool it - I will but I figure the first trimester is more about trying to get things in your belly and having them stay there. Second trimester seems to promise more options on the stomach friendly menu and energy to exercise! I think it will all even itself out.

Am I awful for not paying attention? I feel as long as I'm not something like fifty pounds heavier by the end, then I'll be alright getting the majority of it off.
  • I have gained way to much- I'm starting to worry a little- like 15 pounds. I do tend to gain a little more than I should but I don't want to gain more than I have with my first 2 kids. I'm trying to eat better and be more active, but I can only do so much because I don't want to cause harm. Trying not to stress.
  • When I went to my first appointment (at 7wks) I gained 5lbs but I had also been having a lot of constipation and I felt like an over stuffed sausage, it was ridiculously uncomfortable. They gave me colace and I started to eat more fiber throughout the day. Now I'm 12wk 1d and I ended up losing all 5 of the lbs I gained, now that I can actually digest and pass my food properly. Dr. said that was totally fine and she was happy I felt more comfortable. Pregnancy is weird and different for everyone. I never thought I would be so happy to poop in my entire life though.

I'm 14 weeks and have gained 4 lbs. Looking forward to liking healthy food and exercising again once this nausea/fatigue let's up!
