Pets and new baby

for those that have cats, where did your new baby sleep for the first weeks (besides nursery)?

Our cat loves jumping everywhere, and we want to keep all that hair/vomit/snot (we have an old cat) away from baby for the first couple of weeks. However, there's no way the cat will let us sleep if we locked him out of our room. We would love to do a pack n play, but the cat will be in there in a hot second. Thinking about using our bugaboo bassinet with a stand. Thoughts?

Re: Pets and new baby

  • I seen someone had a thing to put over the crib, playpen, bassinet or whatever baby was sleeping in the prevent cats from getting in ! I can't remember the name of it ! But here's a pic for an idea !!

  • My husband just mentioned this morning that he would like to get one of those for the crib. However, we will have the baby in a bedside bassinet at first and I'm not sure what we will do about that.

My plan is, once the nursery is set up, to let the cats in so that it is not an off-limits, intriguing place. Usually if I have a door shut, for instance if I have clean laundry I don't want them to get into, that's of course the room they want to be in most. So I don't want them to think the nursery is super off-limits, because of course they will try to get in it more.

I'm really hoping they will just be scared of the baby for a while :)
  • My cat never went near my little sister (shes 3 now). My mother never had a problem with her. It was more the dogs peed in nursery. Never went in crib either. I don't trust her she's shady. I will be investing In somthing to keep her away for the first few months.
  • We've been locking our cats ourlt of the bedroom since February to prepare. They only had 2 rough nights of crying and scratching before they got used to their own beds in my husband's office. They still sneak in occasionally if the door isn't latched, but the bedtime meltdowns have ended and we sleep better without them.
  • My cat would shred that thing to bits...if he could jump high enough to get on top of the crib. One of the benefits of having a 17 pound Maine coon mix is that he can't jump worth crap! I've kept him out of my room since he was about 8 months old and have never had issues. I did catch him clawing up the pack and play when I left the nursery door open though :| I'll just put it in my room and invest in some good monitors with video once my son isn't sleeping in my room anymore.
  • We set up our crib and our cats threw up in it. So now we just close the door. I'm hoping they'll be disinterested in it once the many comes, but we can always close the door if we have to.

  • We plan on just keeping the door shut while the baby is sleeping. The door to his room will be open the rest of the time. I feel bad. The nursery is currently the guest bedroom and they love sleeping in there during the day and at night when my fiancé is home. When he's not home they're used to sleeping in the bedroom with me.

I'll have to move their cat beds to the living room couch and hopefully they get used to it.
  • Our cats' food and litter box are in our basement, which is finished, so we close him down there at night when we go to bed and that's "his" space. During the day, we keep the nursery door closed when we aren't in there and if he goes in while we are there, it's ok. He actually mostly hides under the crib or just sits in the middle of the room. So far no attempts have been made to get into the crib or on the dresser/changing table-- fingers crossed it stays that way!
