Breast milk or no breast milk?

Hi ladies... so the nerves are finally kicking in knowing my lil princess' arrival is just around the corner. I really would like to breast feed, but I'm really concerned if I don't produce breast milk when she's born, any advice to calm my nerves? :-S

Re: Breast milk or no breast milk?

  • Have you a particular reason to think you might have an issue producing milk?

Most people produce milk just fine (it can feel like you don't have enough when baby is going through growth spurts, and baby is on you all the time, but that is how they stimulate more milk to accommodate their growth. From memory the first growth spurt is around 10 days).

If you do have issues producing milk there are different things you can try, medications and what have you. A skilled lactation consultant would be your best bet in that situation.

Have you done much reading around breastfeeding, or do you have close friends/family who have breastfed successfully? Sometimes support, knowledge and confidence go a long way towards successful breastfeeding.

Having said all of that, if you do end up being someone who has difficulties producing milk, there is no shame in that. You can always breastfeed to whatever extent you can and top up with formula.

Best wishes to you in your journey.

  • Your milk won't come in until a few days after baby is born. I would suggest reading a book about breastfeeding.

Agreed ! Mine didn't come in for 2-3 days after he was born. Then I produced mega amounts.

Are you saying bc technically at first you produce colostrum or none at all? Maybe it was bc my son was born at 42 weeks but I was able to get right to it on day one. I have also heard some women start leaking before baby is even born. I think just like most aspects of pregnancy it differs by pregnancy and by woman.

  • I highly recommend talking to a lactation consultant while you're in the hospital after you have your baby. Take advantage of them while you can. Most hospitals will provide one, who will come in and talk to you and see how you're doing with bfing your lo. You can also look on Facebook for a local bfing support group. I have one in my area, and they're awesome. It's ran by a few local doulas who are also bfing peer councillors. It's an awesome place for support, advice, and encouragement. I know there's a lot of groups like that. Good luck!! It may not be super easy but you can do it if you work at it! I had a tough time at first but I'm now 13 months into our bfing journey and still going strong even though I'm pregnant! Good luck!!!
