STMs- Did anyone out there have a vertical c section?

I can't seem to find a lot of information about it, other than that it is more painful and takes longer to recover than the horizontal, lower incision. If anyone who has had one can please answer these questions, I would appreciate it (I'm starting to freak out a little. I'm scheduled for 8/3).

1) How long was your recovery? Did the pain affect your ability to hold/breastfeed your baby?

2) Did you use a belly binder to help recovery? If so, what brand is best?

3) Was it more comfortable to wear maternity pants that rested over the incision or pants that stop under it?

4) Do you have any advice?

Thank you so much! Good luck to all you ladies who are getting ready for next month! :)

  • No experience, but may I ask why they are planning to do a vertical vs. horizontal?

  • I have a large fibroid (12 centimeters) above my cervix. It's blocking her vaginal exit route and the normal incision site.
  • Yikes! I will be thinking of you and hope you have a speedy recovery! I would suggest bringing a list of questions to your Dr and asking them about recovery, what you should expect, etc. I would think they should have some information on the differences in the recovery with the vertical vs. horizontal. Good luck!!
  • I had an inverted T incision with my last delivery - so it was the low transverse and the classical. He was my fourth child. The first three were vaginal deliveries, so I cannot compare one c-section to another. I, too, would recommend making a list of questions for your doctor. One thing I would specifically ask is what kind of incision will they make to your abdomen. Although I have the T incision in my uterus, I only have the low horizontal incision on the outside. In terms of recovery for me, my little guy was very sick and sent to the nicu immediately so that is a little different. I was able to hold him and nurse him there until he was transferred to our local children's hospital where we couldn't hold him for a while because of some of the lines he was hooked up to. Although I wasn't able to nurse, I could still pump whenever I wanted. Something I experienced and have read since is that it could take a few more days for your milk to come in after a c-section than a vaginal delivery. You will still have colostrum for the baby, though. I used a belly binder that the hospital gave me for a day or two and I just wore comfortable fold-over waist pants. But again, my outside incision was low and horizontal. Advice I would offer is to stay on top of pain medication and get up and move around as soon as you are able. Also, a good question for future pregnancies would be how soon will they want to deliver the next one because of the incision. I am scheduled for a c-section at 37 weeks this time because the chance of uterine rupture is higher for a T incision than it is for the low transverse if I were to go into labor. Good luck to you!
  • No experience with a vertical incision as I had (thankfully) a classic one, but I have heard that recovery is a bit longer. GL, I hope the Drs are able to answer your questions.
  • Thank you ladies so much!
