The dreaded registry

I have been putting this off....and off....and off some more, because frankly, it's a little overwhelming. But with shower invitations going out soon(ish), I really need to get a move on.
I do really well with check lists...have you ladies found any really good and thorough lists of everything to register for? I dont mean like product review sites...but just a general list of this and that?

Re: The dreaded registry

  • Lucie's list is a good place to start. And the Baby Bargains book is helpful. Good luck!

  • I liked Lucies list as well because it wasn't as overwhelming as some of the longer lists...
  • I agree with the above!  Have an experienced mom look at your list and tell you if she hated a certain brand or if you don't need an overrated item, etc.  DH and I went to BRU to do the fun radar gun scanning as we never had the opportunity to do that for our wedding.  He had a blast and baby girl now has many Star Wars themed items coming her way ;)  Good luck.

  • BRU and Buy Buy Baby have checklists you can look at to help you with your registry. And I believe The Bump has one, too.

However, I agree with having an experienced mom look over the list and help you narrow it down. Some of the suggested items are nice to have but not essential (a glider, bottler warmer), and some are not worth the money.

  • I took my sister with me to register because she has a couple little ones and really helped me with things that were necessary, things that were optional, and certain brands that she preferred. Also, Babies R Us gave us a registry check list when we went and I had found a couple things through pinterest that I brought along with me.
  • My husband and I just registered today and it took 3 hours! We went to Babies R Us and they gave us a checklist that included essential items needed and things that were good to have but not necessary. We probably would have been there until they closed had we not had that checklist! If you research in advance for essentials like strollers and monitors it will probably make things easier. We spent an hour alone playing with different strollers
  • I started with the babies r us and target checklists... Then did comparisons on line to know what to get for the best price... Then asked a few friends what their favorite items were... Looked on etsy for custom stuff like bedding... I just kept in mind that newborns don't need a whole lot- and when you need something you don't have- it's not like you can't run out and get whatever :) good luck and have fun with it :) it's best to actually go into the stores so you can actually see what you are registering for!
  • Lucie's List! I also researched almost everything beforehand, just went to the store to check everything out in person.
  • My friend just had a baby, so I went on her registry and anything that I saw that I liked/she suggested, I just also added it to mine! It was super easy on babies R Us.
  • I did mine on Amazon and they have a check list of categories on top, and with that I used my Baby Bargain book and started at the end of each chapter for their advise on good, better, and best categories. (they give very detailed descriptions of every baby item and brand you can imagine and if you really are trying to make a specific decision, it is helpful in that regard too).   I too was dreading the process, but I found that to be very efficient and helpful.  I have many friends who swore by the Baby Bargain recommendations so hopefully it won't let me down either!
  • Buy Buy Baby gives you a list of everything you may need by category. I found it very helpful. Also, a friend gave me the tip to not plan on doing it all at once. That can make it hard. DH and I went first for about 2 hours to set up the registry and scan some things that were no-brainers (crib mattress, feeding supplies, etc). Than I did a little on line each night and we made a final trip for about an hour to settle on things we were on the fence about "which one to get". It made it TONS easier. Good luck!

We used BRU and just went off the checklist in the back of the book. It really helped! And there were plenty of things on the "must have" list that we decided weren't necessary and skipped them. We also registered for some "good to have" items we wanted.

When all was said and done we had 118 items on our registry and that's without a crob, glider and dresser as we have gotten/are getting those off of wayfair.com. I told the lady at BRU that I felt our list was a bit excessive and she said it's actually good to have that many items because it allows people to have plenty of options in all different price points.

The most expensive things we registered for was a travel system stroller/car seat which is $300, a pack n play for $170, a video baby monitor for $200, Finding Nemo crib bedding set for $150 i think and a high chair for $150.

Everything else is $50 and under all the way down to like $2 items and $5 items
  • Amazon has like 15 essentials or some thing. I have 7 of them. Really don't need the other 8 lol. You will find that half the stuff they say you need, you won't use much. Mine is so simple this time. Literally 4 large items, and then like burp clothes, towels, blankets, onesies. A newborn really doesn't need as much as you think. With my first girl, I had so many dang clothes, and I kept them all because they were so cute. She had a new outfit every day for like 2 months. Total overkill!

You don't need a wipe warmer, they get pissed when you take off the diaper no matter how cold the wipe! You don't need a bouncer, a swing, a glider, a rocker. I got the swing this time that detaches and is also a glider. And bedding! Man, I got a fancy 300 dollar bedding for my first, that never got used. Just the sheets, eventually, when she started even sleeping the big fancy crib at around 9 months old!!! Up until then, it was basically a bed for my cats. What a waste of money that was!

Baby 3 has no theme, just some cute Monsters Inc and Mickey blankets and blue sheets lol. They like to push all this stuff down your throat, and you want it because they make it seem like baby needs it, but they don't. A little baby needs a firm place to sleep, some blankets to keep it warm, diapers, and breast milk or formula. That's it. Oh, and love, don't forget the love!

  • Thanks all for your ideas! I think I'll grab my bff to go with me to register since she has kiddos! Great idea.
Also- @FrozenMommy-i love your realistic no frills approach! Takes the pressure off!
