Tricare Breast Pump policy is now in effect ladies!

Just wanted to remind any mil moms out there that Tricare has started covering breast pumps as of yesterday. I got a prescription from my DR at my Ob appt yesterday, and she already had them preprinted and ready to go. You can also get reimbursed if you have the receipt for pumps going back to Dec. 2014, as long as you get a prescription from your Dr. You are also covered for a new one every birth you have as well as supplies like pump bottles, lines, and storage bags.

I still have questions about which models are covered so if any of you have examples of a "basic electric pump" that they will cover please let me know. Would hate to buy something and then find out it's not covered. Good luck ladies, and remember there are also 6 (I think) sessions with a lactation consultant covered after birth!

  • The military hospital that I delivered my daughter at really pushes nursing so I was always surprised that Tricare didn't cover pumps. I still have my Medela PISA from 2012 so I'm going to reuse it and hopefully just get new tubes and other pieces.

Yay I'm so happy to hear this! \:D/
  • Anyone know where you actually submit your Dr script or how to go about reimbursement? ?
  • I believe you take your script and receipt to the tricare office on base and put in a claim, mine is in the med group building.

This was so great to hear but I haven't been able to get an answer on which pumps (brands) they cover or max cost. I was only told by the tricare rep that they cover 100% but she also told me if I wanted a more expensive one I would have to pay the difference. Wish they had more information available.
  • So happy! Thanks for posting this!
  • So glad this finally happened. It's perfect timing for us due in September. They also bumped up maternity leave from 6 weeks to 12 weeks.

I know! There is no official list or price cap according to tricare online. I am going to go talk to my tricare office about it before I buy, but since I'm leaving for vacation tomorrow it will have to wait until I get back :( I also just noticed that my prescription says it's for a medical grade pump, which I wasn't planning on getting, but I'm guessing if that's what it says that's all they will reimburse so I will have to see about that too when I go...
