I hit my limit!

I am STM but this hasn't been an easy pregnancy. I was spotting 1st trimester, was diagnosed with GD, and have been on modified bedrest since 24 weeks. Yesterday at 32.4 weeks I noticed a rash behind my knee caps. It was itchy but probably not worth worrying about. Last night while I was getting ready for a bath I had a rash on my stomach and back. I called the after hour doctors and they were not worried but said to come in today. I went in this morning they suggested over the counter stuff. If it gets worse then I need to see a dermatologist. Well it is spreading and hurting all over, I am so over this! It looks like I have the measles. Any suggestions or advice? I'm taking oatmeal baths and anti-itch cream.

The good news is there is no risk to the baby.

Re: I hit my limit!

  • My advice is talk to your Dr further. Did you have the other symptoms associated with Measles?? A google search disagrees that there are no risks to the baby...I would also worry about passing this along to your other child/family since it is highly contageous....

  • I'm sorry you're having such a rough time. Did your doctor tell you what it is?

  • Sorry just to clarify it is NOT the measles, it just looks very similar. I figured I would give you an idea of how gross it looks. The doctor said it was just hormones that can cause a skin irritation but not harmful to either of us.

Geez. Hang in there!! You're almost done.

  • Okay that makes MUCH more sense!!! I was wondering why you were so calm about the measles!!! Well I am sorry you are going through this :( that definitely stinks. Try to make sure you are wearing loose soft clothing around the areas where the rash is.
  • Hopefully the OTC stuff helps some!! I have one under my boobs but it's not spreading- I'm attributing it to the disgusting hot and humid weather!
  • Try to stay cool, and don't use any soaps or fragrances or lotions if you can. Like I wouldn't even use shampoo or conditioner in my hair. You can use baking soda mixed with water to "wash" your hair for a few days and some apple cider vinegar as a conditioner. And I second wearing loose cotton clothes. Coconut oil can also help relieve some itch. Good luck and I hope it gets better.
  • Sorry you are going through all of that :(  Only a few more weeks, hang in there!

  • Uhg that sucks! I had a yeast infection under my breasts for a week or two and that was miserable enough. Hope it clears up soon!
  • Sounds like PEP/PUPPP maybe? I had that with my first and I am PRAYING I don't get it again, so far so good. I feel your pain! I used calamine lotion, OTC creams and oatmeal baths. Also just being in cold water helped relieve the itching a bit and cold washcloths on my legs at night because nighttime was the worst. :(
  • Yep, as PP said, it sounds like PUPPs or whatever they're calling it now-a-days. I have it too and it's so annoying. I have a very light rash on my belly but behind my knees is out of control (especially if I get too hot). I love hot baths at night but they've made me miserable since this dumb rash showed up :( My doctor said that Benadryl cream is okay to use. I've also found that a cool, damp rag soothes the itch as well. Sadly, they don't know the cause and there's no cure yet. I was told, however, that it would clear up after delivery.

I completely feel your pain! Good luck.
  • Thank you everyone for the well wishes and advice. I am going to the dermatologist tomorrow to find out more information. Maybe get some stronger meds, will see.

You can try putting coconut oil on the rash, it can soothe the skin and has antibacterial properties.
  • Could it be a heat rash? I had one before and it was awful. And itchy.
  • Pabey, I'm not sure but I will find out tomorrow.
  • I had some skin irritation but decided to cut back on all the oils/lotions I was using and let my skin "dry" and it was back to normal in no time. I actually rubbed some baby powder on my tummy. Keep your skin dry with minimal applications of lotions...dry off immediately after baths/showers and keep your body cool. That's what helped me.
  • Aww poor thing. I can only imagine how uncomfortable you must feel. Hopefully you will get some answers and some relief soon!!
  • Yikes!! Sorry your skin is so irritated! I have a few patches in random places like that that showed up in my 1st tri. My dr said it was probably pregnancy induced eczema. Luckily we're stocked up on eczema supplies bc of my son! But petroleum jelly or eucerin usually does the trick for a bit for me! Good luck!
  • Thank you everyone. I will find out today and maybe sleep at least 4 hours throughout the night. The last two nights have been terrible. I appreciate all the suggestions and kind words.
  • I went to the dermatologist today and ended up with more questions and answers. He determined that this isn't PUPP. He said there's three possibilities, I'm having an allergic reaction to medicine. The only medications I'm taking are prenatals and progesterone and I have been on that since the beginning. The next possibility is that I have strep but I have no sore throat so I doubt it's that. The final possibility is I have a virus. He thinks the most likely thing is the progesterone and would like me to get off it. I am 33 weeks tomorrow but would like to make it to 36 before stopping the progesterone. He will no prescribed anything until my strep culture is back. Ugh!
  • Agree with @cllgarrison on the coconut oil. We always use this for skin irritation. I got a bit of a rash early on in pregnancy and used it daily to keep from scratching!! Of course may want to double check with doc before using in conjunction with whatever she told you to use.
  • I agree with PPs, it sounds like you have pupps. I have it now and it's terrible! I feel your misery. Mine spread from my belly to my arms and legs. The only thing that helped me was when my doc prescribed and antihistamine along with a steroid spray. It took a few days to work but I'm now able to sleep and a top from scratching my skin off. Everything else I tried (ie- oatmeal baths, OTC cortisone creams, aloe, cold compresses, ice) was very temporary relief and did not help the spread. If it continues to be terrible and like.me you can't sleep at night, you should talk to your doc to get something stronger. I was assured and reassured that the meds I was prescribed would not affect baby. Luck!
