Baby won't sleep

Hi everyone, I have a 5 1/2 week old that has reflux. She is on Zantac, and was sleeping better when first put on it (2-3 hour stretches), however, she hasn't been sleeping at all at night the past few days. She sleeps maybe 20 minutes (up to an hour max) and then wakes up crying. I feed and change her diaper, but she still doesn't want to go back to sleep. This lasts all night long until about 10 AM. Has anyone else experienced this? I'll take any suggestions and advice. I'm desperate. I'm afraid my baby isn't getting enough sleep.

Re: Baby won't sleep

  • Does she eat a decent amount every time? She may be cluster feeding as part of her 6 week growth spurt...
  • Loading the player...
  • I agree... she's probably going through a growth spurt and if so it will pass in the next day or two
  • What does she sleep in? Does she sleep at an incline?  My LO has some reflux issues and we've found that he needs to be inclined when he sleeps.
  • I've tried putting her at an incline in her pack N play and in a swing that has her at an incline. She sleeps longer in the swing, because it sways her, but still not long enough to get the amount of sleep she should be getting.

I believe she's getting enough mill when I nurse her. She'd been gaining weight and growing well. If she is going through a growth spurt, how long does it last? Last night was night three of no sleeping.

I started her on probiotics today, so hopefully that'll help with the reflux and sleeping.
  • My son is 7 weeks old and will only sleep more than 20 mins if he's touching me (sleeping on my chest or on his side next to me in bed). When I put him in his bassinet (which I still try every night in case he will one day sleep in it) he wakes up choking on throw up or he startles himself awake because he's the lightest sleeper ever. :( I feel your pain. We've tried gas drops, propping him up, and other stuff... He only sleep if he's being held basically. Hopefully this will change soon!
  • This is the only way any of us get sleep these days...
  • Same here. Only way she sleeps is being held or laying next to me.
  • I had a few nights where DS would only sleep if I was holding him. He wouldn't even if DH tried. Finally one night I laid him in his bassinet, took off the shirt I was wearing and laid it next to him. He "slept like a baby" and so did I. Maybe try giving LO something that smells like you?
  • Definitely trying that tonight! Thanks for the suggestion :)
  • Let us know if it worked. I'm curious to see how effective it is for others!!
  • I made my little man an appointment for Monday. Last night he slept from 2 to 4 solid, before and after it was less than an hour, 20 minutes sometimes. I hope it's not reflux but I can't see it being anything else. I'm on survival mode. I really can't see how I'm even functioning. I can't even stomach seeing some of the 2 month posts saying little ones are sleeping 8 hours. If anything our sleep has gotten way worse. Yawn

Not sure when your LO was prescribed Zantac. It could be possible that your baby gained weight and the dosage is no longer effective. I know that my pediatrician told me that if I notice a change to call the office and they will have me in for a weight check to see if the dosage should be changed. Just a thought.
