Advice re baby name

So myself and my hubby are Irish but live in Oz. Due my first baby (girl) in a few weeks and have really struggled to agree on a name. The only name we both really like is an Irish name Aoife (eefa) meaning beautiful but my concern is the pn and spelling. What are your thoughts? Do you like it? Do you think it's unfair on the child if she grows up in Oz with an unusual name? Thanks girls

Re: Advice re baby name

  • Im in the UK and our choice for a little girl is Aoife too.. We already have a Niamh and think that Aoife will go well with that as well as our other 2 children's names. Many people say that it's unfair to give a child a 'difficult to spell' name but it is beautiful and I think that the child will love it too..
Mind you, the majority of people we have discussed it with have told us that they love it and many hadn't heard of it before we mentioned it..
Go for it! It is beautiful in both meaning and how it sounds..
Our little one is due in 8 days, we don't know what we're having but it'll either be a little Aiden or Aoife.. Good luck to you

  • I think it's different that's for sure, but you guys thought about it and it has a pretty meaning.

If you are really concerned give her a more common middle name and growing up she can choose to go by either one.

If that is your heritage and ethnicity then go for it and who cares what people think. I think it is beautiful and shows you two are proud of being Irish.
  • I think it's absolutely BEAUTIFUL! The only thing I would really consider for future purposes is if you think it might pose a problem for success in the future with job applications and such. That's the one and only rule I stuck with when choosing my child's name because I also like names that are unique. That being said, I always considered if my son would get called for a job interview based on the way things are today. I know most people will discard a resume if they can't pronounce the name. It's unfair and crappy but unfortunately too accurate. I so do love your name choice though!
  • I don't know where Oz is.  ??

If I saw the name Aoife, I would try to pronounce is "ay--oy--fuh."  But I have never taken Gaelic, and I mispronounce names all the time.

    Choose what you like!!!
  • Do it :) it sounds adorable. @wheresilenceismusic Oz is Australia :)
  • I came across that name earlier today and was wondering how to pronounce it. I say do it. I like more unique names...probably because mine is so common.
  • Deffo go 4 an Irish name also Irish having a boy and thinking Oisin as we wanted an Irish name we had caoibhe and Sinead as girl names before we found out it was a boy
  • I love the name Aoife! I used to live in Holland and there we spell it Iva but the v is pronounced like an f. And it's not THAT hard, I wanted Aoibheann for a girl's name, I think that's borderline too hard for people to figure out, but we found out we are having a boy and we chose something else.
  • It is beautiful and a part of your heritage. I say go for it!

This was one of my top choices but I am not irish and I thought it would be too confusing!! All time favourite name!!!
  • @bonnie230 Iam also from Oz and my work recently employed a girl by the name Aoife, it is a beautiful name but she gets called so many different things from Efee to Ay-o-fe. She is continually correcting people. Having said that once we all knew how to pronounce her name it's not a problem. So your daughter will most likely have to correct people at first but once they know she should be fine.
I personally think it's beautiful and something different with actual meaning for you behind it. Good luck!
  • Also an Aussie... Just be prepared for her name to always be mispronounced and misspelt. That being said, I also think you should choose the name that has meaning for you and that you love! There are a heap of unusual names out there these days
