Car seat use...how long is okay?

Hi all!

I usually take my baby for a long walk each day. Her stroller is a travel system that the infant car seat connects to. The walk is about 45 minutes. We also usually take a couple drives per day, it helps soothe her, say 20 minutes each. Last of all we usually do one errand per day for which I put her carseat carrier into the large part of the carriage in the store...say something like 20 minutes running through target.

Is this too much time in the car seat? It is spread out throughout the day. I worry now about their little heads getting that flat spot because babies sleep on their back. She does do tummy time for a little each day and has good head control (great actually for her age, 5 weeks).

Any thoughts? Thanks!!!

  • Get a wrap or infant carrier! You can wear your LO during the walks and when you run errands, take her out of the car seat when you get to the store and wear her around while shopping. It's great, easy, frees up your hands so you can push a cart. It also promotes bonding, will comfort her and relieves any pressure she'd have on the back of her head from the car seat. They are a game changer. I have an Ergobaby wrap which LO loves and actually falls asleep in most times and an Infanto baby carrier.

  • I guess it would depend how much time she spends on her head besides that.  Mine always sleeps with her head to the side, so if she's in the carseat, with her head down flat on the back of it, I wouldn't worry at all for that length of time - she sleeps way more than that on the sides.  If she doesn't turn her head when she sleeps, I'd ask your doctor.

She does turn her head when she sleeps, half of the time on one side and half on the other. Maybe not that bad then?

And yes, I just got a carrier two days ago and love it, great idea!!
  • I wouldn't worry too much about it. It sounds like you are being proactive in other ways to help her head! We have gone on a 4 hour car ride (with a pit stop in between) and baby is fine :) it's not recommended but some babies (not mine) will only sleep in a car seat. Sounds like you are just doing typical everyday stuff! Lol. But I have a Moby because sometimes baby decides he isn't liking to be strapped in anymore so now the Moby goes to the store and on walks with us- just in case!!
  • Is your LO big enough to lay down in the regular stroller part? I take my LO for a walk and if he is awake I take him out of the car seat and buckle him right in the stroller.
