Need advice

hey ladies. My babyshower is in two months but I was wondering, do I wait till after the shower to purchase the crib and or stroller travel set ? I'm getting nervous cause I don't want to wait to the last minute nor do I want to rely on the fact that someone might buy it for me. I am a first time mom and would like some pointers on when you guys started or decided to purchase those items

Re: Need advice

  • Don't buy a stroller travel set, waste of money and you have many many months to buy a crib. Depending on how you do it you may not need a crib for the first few months if you keep the baby in your room. No rush on these things.

  • I would wait on the stroller set, that could be bought by someone.  It would surprise me if someone bought my crib for me (you could have better friends than I do though)  So, I am not even registering for that.  I haven't bought it yet, but only because I am waiting on my mom and/or grandma to ask what I need.  The plus to registering for the crib is you may get a discount on it, depending on where you register.  I think any time now would be okay to buy those items though.

  • Thank you ! I already had a grandparent purchase my crib bedding. Thank the lord cause there was only one left. I am one of those people that want to be prepared ahead of time instead of my parents who waited till the week of to buy the major items.
  • I'm with you, I need to be prepared well in advanced as well!  I am not doing a crib bedding set, just a few fitted sheets since you can't use that stuff anyways. One less thing to buy! :)

  • You know your shower guests better than anyone else. My family are not the type to go in on things with each other, so since I knew that no one was going to be spending $300+ on a car seat/travel system, I just went and got it because I found a really good sale.

Another thing to consider is that you might be getting a good amount of gift cards, so you could also put that towards your bigger items.

You can use the set not the bumper, mine didn't come with the bumper nor did I want it anyways.
  • I would wait. My mom bought the stroller/car seat set for our first and my MIL bought the crib. Also, as others said you may get gift cards to go towards those items. And you do get the percent off if you register for it and wait for your completion coupon.

They say nothing but a fitted sheet in the crib.  I might get a bed skirt.

  • Depending on where you are buying the crib you may want to see how longs it takes to come in. I think our took two months. A lot of parents don't use the crib right away so it might not be a big deal if it is late, but that is a nice one to have out of the way before baby comes.
Also we got a lot of gift cards at the baby shower, so even if you don't think you will be gifted the larger items you can wait so you can use the completion discount and any gift cards you get.

  • Yes ! My crib is connected with the changing table so it's something I know I'm going need before baby is born. We have a one bedroom so the crib will be arms length away from me. I just get nervous, I knew a lot of people that went to baby showers and didn't even use the mother to be's registry. And the completion coupon I was told was 6 weeks after the birth, unless that was the 10% back.

We registered at babies r us and got the completion coupon in plenty of time before baby (I cannot remember exactly how long before it was). The clerks at the store also found a bunch of other coupons to save me even more money.

  • This is a relief :)
  • Hi,

Really glad you made this post because I was wondering the same thing! I started a secret registry over the weekend, I haven't told anyone about it. Just wanted to check out actual prices of baby items and make a checklist. My husband and I have decided that we will be purchasing the big things like the crib, glider, and travel system on our own. The glider and ottoman that I want costs $600 alone. I don't expect or want anyone to spend that amount of money on us. Personally, I am not going to rely on someone else to buy any of the essentials so I am not including them on the registry. Everything else can be determined after the baby shower. Do what you're most comfortable with. Good luck!

  • My parents bought the car seat and stroller travel system, we used it all the time. My mil was going to buy the crib but our friends daughter only slept in her crib twice so they gave it to us, which was great! We didn't buy anything until after the shower
  • I agree with someone else that you know your guests the best. My in laws have some money and my SILs ended up going in together and getting the car seat stroller combo for us and 1 of my father in laws got us a crib.

The stroller combo I would wait on, that is an easy thing for people to go in on together. I see a lot of them given at baby showers.

Another point that I didn't see made skimming through is that usually with registries, you get a coupon to use toward buying any items that weren't bought for you.  I don't know when they usually give them (if it's not until after your due date, then obviously that wouldn't apply), but it may be something to consider...
  • We have two registries, one that was originally just for our big purchases we were taking care of ourselves and the other for basic items that are pretty budget-friendly. Much to our surprise our family and close friends have been asking to see the fancy one. With that said you never know! I'd probably wait to purchase big ticket items unless they're on sale or of limited quantity.

Yes. I mentioned it before. I know at baby's r us gives you 10% off each item on your registry that was not purchased and the. 6-8 weeks after the due date they give you a gift card with 10% back from all items purchased on the registry. You need the car seat in order to take the baby home from the hospital.
  • You never know. I would wait. My mom really wanted to gift us the crib and other baby furniture because that's what my grandma did for her.

My ILs, SIL and 2 of DH's aunts went in on the travel system and a few other things together.

A few of my other aunts went in together on other big items like the swing and high chair.

We only got things on out registry and were so grateful for the amazing stuff we got. Almost all of our most expensive items were bought because family and friends teamed up and bought them together. That's common in my family though. Usually we all pitch in $30-$40 and then buy 2 or 3 of the bigger things on my cousins' registries.
  • I got a crib and travel system with my first for my babyshower. Actually I got absolutely everything I needed for my son and then some. I didn't even need to buy diapers til he was around 8 months old! But I also have a really large family. I didn't even use the crib til he was older also. I used a bassinet. Which I also got from my shower. Just wait. I know it's really hard to do that but you never know what others plan in giving to you. People usually go in on the big gifts with each other.
  • We aren't having a shower but I would do the same regardless.  I just buy what I want went I want to buy it.  With the crib, be aware that it can take awhile to come in depending on what you want and if it is in stock.  I believe it took a couple months to get ours with our son. If you end up getting things you already have you can always exchange them.  I'd certainly feel pretty safe buying the furniture and other more expensive items.
