Holy Hicks Contractions

So, like a lot of us, I've been getting these for months. Last night they actually got to the point of waking me up. Repeatedly. I came downstairs, had some water, and dozed on the couch for a couple of hours.

Given a history of preterm labor with my older two, I went ahead and checked in with my OB this morning for a check up. Everything is fine and still "closed up".

I guess I'm just wondering if anyone else is going through this sudden shift with the Hicks contractions. With me at this point, if I'm vertical, I'm probably having one.

Re: Holy Hicks Contractions

  • Yep. Last night was bad. I think BTDT moms experience this more. Man, I thought I was going to have to take a trip to L&D last night.

  • Yup, I've noticed mine have started to get more intense the last couple days.. Weren't painful before but are really starting to bother me now!
  • Today is the first time I am having them as much as I am they are getting more intense.
  • All. The. Time. Last night was rough for me too! Contractions were 2 min apart for hours... I'm afraid I won't even know when labor is truly starting. I'm 31w4d.
  • I'm still not getting any (I don't think?) I suppose I should just be grateful... My (probably irrational) fear is that if I'm not getting warmup contractions I'll never go into labor, have to be induced or end up FTP and so on

  • I never had any with #1. With #2 it was only the last 10wks during exercise. With this 3rd pregnancy they started at 20wks and happen even when I am just sitting on the couch.

  • There must have been something in the air last night cuz I thought I was going to have to make a trip to L&D because of them too.
  • I've been having them all the time! I talked to l&d and the nurse told me I may just have a "irritable uterus".....lol
I joked with my friend that it's more like a angry uterus
  • Yes, I carry around a prescription for Procardia with me at all times. Mine were bad today too, I was contemplating L & D as well. Is there a full moon or something??

Last night was a full moon... Or is it tonite since its July 2?
  • Ill chalk it up to being a full moon.
  • Having them right now! Only I don't remember BH being this intense! I was feeling crampy earlier today and that has pretty much gone and now this. Each one seems to last longer than it should though. Can't wait to be able to go lay down for a bit!
  • Every day. sometimes they last so long I forget i'm having them. they stink.
Always hold on to hope ❤
  • Had such painful ones today I thought I was gonna puke, now I have horrible heart burn cuz I thought a funnel cake would be a good idea.. And cheese fries... Ugh!!!
  • I got really crampy and achy today as I was being active, to the point I started getting worried. When I sat down and rested it went away. As a FTM I'm not sure what I'm feeling, but my whole belly was rock hard. I thought BH sort of come and go, this was more constant. Who knows... :-S

I had the same thing and didn't know what it was. I don't understand my body anymore. First time mom problems..
  • Yep constantly and has definitely been worse the last few weeks. I feel like I'm getting nothing done because I feel like I need to lay down any time my toddler actually gives me a chance to try and get the contractions to stop. I'm supposed to call if I get more than 6 and hour and 4-6 an hour has just become routine. I've never had to make a trip to L&D early, and I'd rather not... Doctor checked my cervix last week on an ultrasound though, and I'm not dilated at all.
  • Today I had one that wrapped all the way around to my back. It was awful. If thats any indication of what back labor feels like then I feel so bad for anyone who's had to go through that. It was intense.
  • Ive been getting them more frequently this time around. He is head down and the lightning crotch is getting intense.

  • I don't think I've been having any really... at least nor any like I remember them 7 years ago. This done around it feels like period cramps (same area too) but they go away if I slow down and only ever happen when I'm at work.
  • Yep! I have been having them since Saturday. Usually if I move too fast or walk around to much
  • Definitely the full moon. If it can impact the ocean, of course it can affect the water in our tummies.
  • Wow crazy to hear all of you went through the same thing I did last night.... I'm only 34.6 and my BH were consistently 4-6 min apart for at least 5 hours.. I called LnD and they said to wait it out until they start to hurt and then come in. I'm glad it never came to that, I'd like for her to stay in there a couple weeks longer! Anybody else wake up feeling like they worked out at the gym for 24 hours straight doing only abs?? :-|

Yesterday morning, I was awakened out of my sleep with severe back pain....I switched position, then walked, drank water...then after about an hour I was able to all back to sleep. I first had BH at about 18 weeks tightening lower abdomen (no pain)....so for these to hurt, I was dumbfounded!! Jeez, glad I definitely was not alone with the BH experience.
  • Full moon had me just about in L&D the other night

  • I've been having them all day long for weeks now. They've definitely gotten stronger in that I can hardly breathe through them, and I feel them all the way in my face. I'll get really hot and trying to move during one makes it worse.
It sucks! But I'm still under the "more than six an hour" my OB said was safe.

  • I'm pretty sure my body just doesn't know what it's supposed to do. This is my third baby and I've never had BH or experienced active labor. This will be my 3rd csection. Even when I had a m/c my body didn't do it on it's own, I had to have a d&e. WTH body!? Do something!
  • Yes! I mainly get them at night. I've told my dr about them. They finally caught them on the monitor during my NST last night and the night before.
I told my husband I knew I wasn't crazy. Haha. He never believes me when I say 1 is coming. They take my breath away!
  • FTM and I've had BH since like week 22. I was super freaked out by them for the first month or so but now I try to ignore them. The worst is when I get them when I'm out and about in public, makes it uncomfortable to walk! I get them with varying intenseness now...some I'm not even sure if it's BH or LO pushing, then some I have to stop what I'm doing and try and to relax. I'm just hoping my uterus will be super in shape and be able to work very efficiently when real contractions come!
  • I feel like most of the time all i'm commenting on here is how uncomfortable I am from BH, lol ;)

I know i had them bad last pregnancy, but this is just frustrating and uncomfortable and I'm not looking forward to x weeks more of these... ugh!

So funny that you say this. One of my relatives told me several months ago that more babies are born around the full moon. I thought she was crazy, but I'm having way more BH too. Maybe there was something to it after all, since all of our bodies seem to be in overdrive!
  • I haven't had any BH yet. Is that weird?
  • @messymolly08 According to my doc, it would be weird to be this far along and not be having them (assuming you're due in August). I have heard though that some people have them and just don't feel them. It might not be painful at all, just a hardening of the belly but if your hands aren't on your belly when it's happening you would never know it happened. They typically don't last long, less than 30ish seconds (or so says my nurse).
  • How many of yours are like menstrual cramps but just constant? Mine are like my period is coming but it's constant cramping.. Then some mild contractions in between. But I've had constant cramping for a few days now.

This is my second but I never had BH or contractions until after my water broke with my first
  • I haven't had any BH yet. Is that weird?
No it's not. I didn't have any at all with my first. Just went straight to labor!

  • BH have been pretty much content tonight, and I think LO is having a party in there. They usually don't bother me but I am actually starting to get sore now :-S
  • Last night was awful!!! I kept waking us both up with my moaning. I woke up and showered it's a little better now, but I am convinced I dialated a bit over night. No water breaking so far and no L&D trips just yet. [-O< stay put baby!
