Awfully painful pregnancy

I'm 20 weeks along and I have had a very crampy, painful pregnancy so far. However, now I am getting new pains, mainly a lot of sharp shooting/prickly pains in the low pelvic area and it feels like pulled muscles on both of the outsides of my stomach like right where there is the "hourglass" figure. I feel like the nurse I saw today wasn't concerned at all which seems to be a good thing but I find it strange that I suddenly am having these new very uncomfortable pains and no reasons as to why.

Re: Awfully painful pregnancy

  • I get them to, I want to say it's also heat related. My midwives told me to drink like a gallon of water a day. This is my 4th baby but 1st summer baby. It's going to be a long next 2-3 months in this heat

This is my first baby so all these pains are new to me but where I live it hasn't been hot lately just comfortably warm. I know the baby is fine but I'm still overly concerned.
  • Did you get to talk to your doc? I would make sure to talk to them. In my 2nd pregnancy I started having real contractions at 23 weeks, baby was perfectly fine, no big restrictions on me, I was just very uncomfortable for 17 weeks! I was given a medication to help with it.

Request to talk to a doc!!
  • Some of what you're feeling *could* be the round ligament pain and other stretching out. Turns out babies do funny things to our body.

Lol I almost hate it when the doctor/nurse isn't concerned by something I tell them I'm experiencing (for me, I threw up 6 times in a night but was able to slowly eat things in the morning so they weren't concerned because I was able to hold something down in a 24 hr period.... I was into the 2nd trimester and it worried me - it should worry my dr too, darn it! ;) ) but I guess that's why they're paid to do this thing - they know what they're doing and have the experience necessary to know when to be concerned (as long as you make sure you tell them so they know what your symptoms are and can take them all into account)

I know it's easier said than done, but trust your doctor/nurse. Even if they were fresh out of med school, they would still have more experience with pregnancy than even anyone on this board (unless one of the N15 moms happens to work at the OB)

Yeah I wish they showed more concern, I basically always get told its just growing pains and hormones but I have never known anyone else that experienced as many pains as I have. I just wish I could enjoy the pregnancy without being constantly worried about new pains.
  • Sounds like round ligament pain to me. I'm a ftm and these sharp shooting pain started today. It's awful! It feels like I strained my stomach and freeze in pain for a few seconds. I read that increasing water intake helps. Again, I'm a FTM, no medical professional. Thank you for posting this question. I will be following all of the answers :) we can get through this!
  • I have this, and I'm sorry you are dealing with it too. Last weekend I suddenly got this pain that hurt too much to even stand up straight. It lasted a couple of hours. My midwife said that it didn't sound like round ligament pain but as long as it went away and wasn't accompanied by other symptoms (fever, spotting) then it was probably nothing to worry about.

But god forbid if I happen to sneeze! Ouch.
  • I agree with PPs. Sounds like round ligament pain. If your OB isn't worried, I wouldn't worry either.

I haven't had a lot of rlp, however my hips & lower back have been constantly aching for some time now. Laying in bed makes it worse, to the point where I limp a little when I first get up, until my hips adjust. Everything just feels loose and painful, like my legs are going to pop right off!

  • Leahval, if it helps you to feel better (or worse, I'm not sure, haha!), I have also had a very crampy pregnancy.  Lots of cramps that feel like menstrual cramps lower in the abdomen that were painful enough to wake me up and keep me up at night.  More recently I have started getting the pulling pains on the side, likely just round ligament pains.  My doctor wasn't concerned by the cramps, or the coinciding spotting I was having, but when I started to actively bleed they took action immediately and knew exactly what to check for/do.  Keep your doctor informed, and let them know the frequency/duration on your symptoms so they can make suggestions appropriately. It was recommended to me to drink lots of water and limit certain activities at home and work to help with the cramping.

  • I have been feeling the same excruciating contracting feeling when I stand or move too quickly but I'm going to try drinking more water, its been a hot summer in Texas! I hope everyone's pain eases up a bit!
  • Sorry to hear....last week I had a bad scare and went to Er....they told me same thing round ligament pain...but the next day it got worse so went to a women's Er and after ultrasound turns out I have a 7cm fibroid tumor which my doc treated with meds and felt 100% better in less than 24 hours....my advice go with your gut
