Headaches....anyone else?

Ive battled headaches pretty much my entire life. Always was able to take imitrex to treat them. Now, being pregnant, my options are limited. Anyone else going through this? I can't be alone!

Re: Headaches....anyone else?

  • Yup. I call it "the visor." I've really had to cool it on the activities and drink more water.

  • This one I have now has been here for 3 days. It's a "cluster headache" and there are almost zero treatments while pregnant. Not really sure what to do. :-/
  • Same issue here, but mine are due to bad posture at the office - my doctor gave me magnesium and it helps everything relax. Ask your doctor if it's fine for you to take the magnesium supplement. It also helps with the whole constipation part :)
  • So glad I'm not alone! Fortunately, since I'm a teacher I'm on summer break, so I just took a 3 hour nap in the hopes it would go away. Took the edge off but not entirely.

My doctor also told me to take magnesium so I've been taking that... Not sure how much it has helped.

Depending on the day, sometimes peppermint oil or Tylenol will help. Sometimes.

I get them constantly... It always seems to come at night then wake me up several times hurting so bad I want to cry then again feeling it lightly and really groggy from not sleeping well the entire next day! Ugh!
  • There have been a few threads with some good recommendations for headaches. I have gotten migraines my whole life too and had to go off my prescription when I was pregnant with my son. My dr recommended acupuncture and it has helped so much! In fact, I've continued with the acupuncture and never went back on my prescription after my son was born. Also drink LOTS and LOTS of water.

I've had headaches for the last 15yrs and somehow when I was pregnant with my son I didn't get any throughout my pregnancy, this time around I can't seem to get rid of my headache even for a day! I'm miserable with you guys and sending good vibes!

I am so envious of you during your first pregnancy. I've had an increase in migraines with both of mine. Both of my pregnancies have been in the summer too, when I also see an increase in my migraines. Nothing helps. Tylenol sucks. I want my Aleve back. :(( rant over

I want my Goody's Powder.  I'd even resort to BC Powder.  It's Satan's Little Pixie Stick, but it works so well.

  • Mine were really awful my entire 1st trimester, and they still come & go. I miss being able to take ibuprofen. I know we can take acetaminophen, but I've been trying to keep my pregnancy as medication-free as possible. Just drink a ton of water, and hang out in a dark room whenever possible. Also, this might seem super weird, but squeezing/putting pressure on the top & sides of your head might offer relief, too. I'm not sure why, but it offers me immediate (although temporary) relief when I am having a migraine. Sometimes I will have my SO do it for me.
    Pregnancy Ticker
  • I've also had them my whole life but they had eased up since my first pregnancy. This time they are back and I'm not loving it. They last for days. I try to stay hydrated and when one gets to where it is interfering with my day I take Tylenol and drink a soda. I will say I think they are easing up. (I hope)

    Pregnancy Ticker
  • Caffeine is the only thing that helps my pregnancy headaches. I've resorted to a soda for both pregnancies when I feel a headache coming on.

Same for me.  I opt for coffee when it's available, but a caffeinated soda will do the trick, too.  Tylenol really doesn't seem to help much if I take it by itself, but in conjunction with caffeine, it gets a boost.  I used to be a big caffeine drinker (a couple of cups of coffee if I was up early, plus whatever I got from soda - mostly Coke - during the rest of the day), and cutting back on caffeine is actually making the headaches worse.  The RN I saw for my 16w appointment said it was perfectly fine for me to have a couple of caffeinated drinks a day, but I still make a conscious effort to limit my intake.
