I have been experiencing lower abdominal swelling with fluid retention the last few days. I talked to an on call nurse and he said that he's never heard of that symptom but everything else with baby sounds fine. He told me to push water and reduce sodium intake than call back Monday to check in on progress.
Re: Anyone experiencing lower abdominal swelling/fluid retention (edema) that is tender to the touch?
I'm now 38+3wks and it's no better.. It's very tender to touch and (sorry to sound gross....) but (I warned ya!) it feels a bit like a scrotum! It's hard and the skin somehow feels thicker than elsewhere on my tummy.
I mentioned it to my GP weeks ago, she examined me and said she believes it is oedema as fluid tends to gather 'low down' - feet, hands, abdomen.. She said it isn't anything sinister.
She advised me to drink plenty of water and keep active.. It hasn't really eased to be honest, but it helps to know it's nothing nasty..
The main impact it has had on my is whenever my midwife measures me, the measurement is even bigger than it would normally be (I'm a big girl) due to the extra swelling in my tummy..
By all means, ask your doctor for advice but I'd hate to think of someone else worrying as I did, I was convinced something was wrong..
Good luck and if you do get that 'scrotal feeling', you are not alone! Urgh!
