Pyloric stenosis

Liam was just diagnosed with pyloric stenosis and we are headed 2 hours from home to the nearest Children's Hospital for surgery. His pediatrician says this is a fairly common and simple procedure but I can't help but be a nervous wreck about my one month old having surgery. Has anyone else ever dealt with this? Your thoughts and prayers are appreciated.

Re: Pyloric stenosis

  • My niece and nephew both went through it and it was an easy procedure.

  • My very good friend had this with her son, he had the surgery 2 months ago. No issues whatsoever. I was pretty worried about the little guy but the surgery is really common, quick and there is like no issues afterwards he totally handled it like a champ and she said while she was super worried before afterwards it really was no big deal. Her son is now 6 months old and of course totally adorable with no issues! Hoping the same for you and your lo.

My first son had pyloric stenosis surgery at 4 weeks old. Due to the fact it took a while to diagnosis he was very dehydrated and had to be on IV fluids and had an ng tube for 2 days prior to having surgery. (Just a heads up if that happens- they said it was common with pyloric stenosis)After the surgery he did great - didn't have any problems keeping formula down. He is now 2 and has never had any issues since. I know it's very scary but it is pretty common ( they told me 1 in 500) and I'm sure he'll do great.

Update: Liam had surgery around 3 PM yesterday. The doctor told us to expect it to take a while longer for him to recover due to the amount of blood and irritation in his stomach, but he has surprised us all and has been able to meet all of his feeding goals. The nurse expects that we can take him home this evening. :)

Happy to hear he is meeting his feeding goals and that you are expecting to take him home tonight! Continued thoughts for you and your little one as he recovers!
  • Keeping Liam in my T&P for continued speedy recovery! Glad surgery went well.
  • So thankful for a wonderful update. Wishing all the best for Liam & family.

@ngaines27 how did you know Liam had this problem, if you don't mind my asking?

Best wishes for a continued speedy recovery, hopefully at home!

Liam has had occasional projectile spit up since about a week old that has progressively became projectile vomiting after each feeding. Last Wednesday his pediatrician ordered an ultrasound that came back normal. She prescribed reflux meds and changed formula but the problem only got worse. I brought him back to the pediatrician on Tuesday and he'd lost 3 oz, so she ordered another ultrasound which confirmed pyloric stenosis.

Apparently, with this condition, the pylorus thickens over time so it makes sense that the original ultrasound was negative.
  • @ngaines27 thank you for explaining. that sounds terrifying, watching your baby go through that at every feed. so glad you got an answer and he's through surgery! big hugs to you and Liam

It has been a very stressful couple of weeks. The day of surgery especially as he began vomiting blood from all of the irritation in his stomach and esophagus.

It's amazing the difference in him almost immediately following surgery. We are grateful.
  • Thinking of Liam !!! I just now saw this....
You are so tough ! That's a lot to go through. @ngaines27

My boy had an ultrasound today to check for this. We won't know the results for a couple of days yet.
