Gender at 10 weeks

hey mammas,

So my ob told me at my last appointment that there is a new test out... It's a blood test that will tell you with 99% certainty if your baby will have Down syndrome. Also it will tell you the gender with 99% certainty. It was designed for women over 35, but It is open to all ages (I'm not 35 yet but will get this test).
Talk to your doctor about it if interested- please also ask how the lab will charge you if you are under 35! The lab my ob uses will not charge me.

Re: Gender at 10 weeks

  • 1. The base of the replies you're going to get are telling you to change gender to sex.

    2. You're doing an invasive blood test just to find out the sex of your baby before 18-20 weeks?
  • Loading the player...
  • My OB told me the same thing at my first "get to know you" appointment.  She said insurance would more than likely cover it since I will be turning 35 before the baby is born.  It is a simple blood draw, non invasive and will give you the sex results as well as checking for Downs.  The test is usually done at 10 weeks and takes a few weeks to get the results.  She also said that insurance should cover it, but if they didn't, out of pocket is around $100.  I go in next week for my full 8 week appt so I will get more information then.

I'm getting it done at around 13 weeks but I wasn't aware it also tests the sex of the child...that is news to me! :) im 32 but i think it's Def. better to get it done for peace of mind :)

I'm planning to get it done as well. I wouldn't call a blood test invasive. It's 100% safe for both me and the little one and it will hopefully give us some reassurance, as we are older and have a bad history with pregnancy. The sex determination is just a perk for us.

Is it something you have to ask them to actually include in the results?

From what I understand there are different tests for Down syndrome and not all of them test gender/ sex (why does this matter?) you'll need to ask specifically for that test. When I asked I was told since I'm under 35 insurance will likely not cover it and she said it was $1000 out of pocket. I'm going to call my insurance because my 24 year old cousin just had it done and it was covered. I'm 29.

  • My doctor said she used to do it for women but the ones under 35 who aren't considered high risk were getting a bill in the mail for over 1k. I'd call your insurance company first and make sure on the out of pocket cost.
The rep for the company had told the doctor it's covered, but something happened where it really wasn't and she had a lot of angry patients. She stopped offering it for those under 35 for that reason until it gets worked out. So, I'm just going to have my nft and wait for the anatomy scan.

I hope my doctor mentions this on at my first appointment on Monday. We haven't decided if we want to find out the sex but any health info we can have would be great, especially since I will be delivering at 38.

It's a simple blood draw from the mother's arm - hardly invasive.

  • I think the test is called Maternity 21 or something? It is a blood test and test for several disorders. If you come back positive, then they would encourage you for an amniocentesis for further probing into the baby. You doctor can give you the billing codes and you can call your insurance company to see if it is covered or not for you under your plan.

We didn't do it the first time around---and I don't think we will this time for a variety of reasons. For the sex of the baby alone---I can't wait to find out at 20 weeks what we are having---but that is also giving me something to look forward to at the half-way point too.

  • Yeah, there are a few threads on this already. Make sure you search next time.

The test is called Verifi. The company caps the out of pocket cost at $99.

  • There must be different companies that do it because I know there's also the Harmony blood test.

  • There is @inomniaparatus. Verifi is the only one with a capped cost, to my knowledge.

I always like reading your post @magnumJ you def seem able to answer a lot of questions!

  • My Doctor mentioned something to this effect in passing at my first appointment. told me at 12 weeks he's do a blood test to check for genetic issues. which i thought was weird, bu since he said it'd be at 12 weeks i didn't really think too much about it, figured i'd ask for clarification at that time. lots of info at that first appointment.
I'm definitely going to ask about testing for sex with that test too.
  • There are several names to these tests Materniti21, Panorama, Verifi, Harmony, etc.
I just read an article the other day about times when these tests are wrong! People have been told that their baby had a chromosomal disorder and then had a healthy baby. Apparently some doctors aren't well educated on these tests, that they should still be thought of as a screening, not a conclusive test!!! I'll link one of the articles I read that talked about families that chose to terminate their pregnancy without doing any more testing. Babies have been aborted that were actually healthy, since the women weren't well educated on the risks of these tests being wrong.

  • My dr mentioned it and it's called panarama at my dr's office. I think this test is supposed to have fewer false positives. If something were to show up, she said they would then recommend more testing like an amniocentesis. I don't know if we are going to do it, even though it's noninvasive and can tell the sex. I'm under 35 and am just hoping for happy and heathy.
  • Most of these tests don't give a definitive answer. They tell you the chances that your baby will have a certain defect or condition. If you've been told you have a 1 in 4 chance of something happening, that's pretty high, but there is still a 75% chance it won't happen. You just have to be realistic when you see the results.

  • We're doing the Panorama because any negative feedback will risk me out of any hospital within an hour of my home. The sex is a bonus.

It's a blood test. It is actually considered a non - invasive option.

  • My friend had to have one of these because she's "of advanced age." She's 35. LOL. It was just a normal blood draw. Not invasive. Finding out the sex at 12 weeks was a fun bonus.

This is exactly what I was told at my appointment today. It checks for Trisomy 13, 18, and 21. It can also determine gender. Just a blood draw. For no more than $99, I don't see why not!

  • Yes, I'm pretty sure it only tells you the chances that you could have a baby with these defects, not if the baby actually has it. Those tests wouldn't come until later and are more comprehensive than a simple blood test.

It was my midwife who told me the cost is capped. It sounded relatively new. I wasn't able to find anything online about it, which is strange, but I still believe her.

This is the one in Canada. It costs about $800-$1000 I believe and is not covered by medical yet however they are currently doing studies in the hopes of including this in prenatal testing over the old test. It's used in Canada more so for chromosomal abnormalities than sex of the baby but some can look at that as an added bonus.

  • I too knew a woman who was going to have this test done (but she is not 35), and it was going to cost her $1,000 out of pocket. That's a lot of money for 6 weeks difference, since many offices offer gender prediction at 16 weeks (for about $100 extra, if at all). I'd suggest really looking into it before you decide to it. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
  • The whole point of the blood testing and A/S isn't to find out sex. It's to make sure your baby is healthy. Seriously people.

Exactly! It's about $1200 here and I'm paying for all pregnancy expenses out of pocket. Regardless, unless deemed medically necessary, not doing it.

This must be new. I had the test done in May of 2013 after a cardiac defect was found on our a/s and there was no cap. I paid $250ish OOP after insurance. We were told to be prepared to pay up to $1000 (the full billed cost), since some companies still weren't covering it at all.
