Experienced moms: swaddling

If you swaddled a previous baby:

1) Do you have any favorite recommendations for non-blanket swaddles? (I prefer not to have to use a swaddle blanket that i have to elaborately wrap. The actual swaddles seem easier.)

2) Until how many months did you swaddle them? I am wondering what size(s) to get.

3) How many of each size is good (wondering how dirty they get if baby is just sleeping).

4) Did you take them out of the swaddle for nighttime feedings?

Re: Experienced moms: swaddling

  • Swaddle was just for sleeping for the first month or 2, as I recall. After that they wiggle way too much to stay in a swaddle. We just used the receiving blankets, and hubby was WAY better at it than I was. I guess the nurses worked with him lol.

Swaddleme is my favorite swaddler. I don't get the fleece ones, the cotton ones keep my babies plenty warm. I bought 2 of the sm/md size and 2 of the lg size. They generally came in a 2 pack so that worked out fine. Babies don't get dirty per se while they're sleeping, but should they have a blow out or spit up mess then you'll have an extra for back up. My babies wore them past 6 months. They just slept better that way. You will take them out of the swaddler if you plan on changing their diaper in the middle of the night. Otherwise it's not necessary to take them out while you feed them.
  • I am bummed because I think a few more women posted in response (I checked it briefly sometime yesterday evening), but when I checked again after midnight the new responses were gone :( One or two ladies posted about not feeling bad if you can't swaddle as well as the nurses at the hospital. If you posted and it was lost, if you have time, I would really appreciate a repost but understand if you don't.
  • 1) I second the Summer Infant Swaddleme.  We called them the baby straightjackets.  They're very simple to use - tuck in baby's legs, line the top up with baby's shoulders, and wrap the velcroed "wings" snug around baby's arms.  Our son really loved being swaddled, but he was a wiggler and we were afraid he'd work his way out of the traditional swaddling we learned how to do at a newborn class and the loose blanket would be a suffocation risk.  So these were great.

    2) We used them all the way up through the largest size they make, and then used the "sleep sack" which is basically a zip-up blanket to wear.  But we bought them as he grew - you never know if your baby will even like being swaddled, or for how long.

    3) It's good to have at least 2 - there were some blowouts I can remember in the middle of the night and it was nice having clean back-ups.

    4) I did, because I changed my son every time I fed him at night until he was a bit older.
  • I don't even remember how long we swaddled, I would say at least 6 months.  We bought bigger sizes as we went once we realized how well it worked.  We had both the blankets and the "Swaddle-me" type.  My husband was excellent with the blankets and would often use that but when I got up in the middle of the night, I could never get the blankets right and he would wiggle out in about 30 seconds so I preferred the Velcro swaddles.  Also the blankets were nearly impossible once he got bigger and wiggly.  Definitely have backups...there were nights we went through 3 swaddles due to diaper blowouts or spitting up.

We tried swaddling. My daughter hated it. She wanted to be able to move and would scream everytime she was swaddled. We were using muslim cloth blankets because she was a summer baby. With this baby I'll try swaddling again and if she likes it I plan to get some of those swaddle me blankets.

  • Both of my kids loved to be swaddled, but blankets worked better than any of those premade wraps.  My MIL taught me this great way to swaddle that really kept baby bundled better than the normal way they show you, but I'm not positive I remember it.  By 3 or 4 months the babies were breaking out of whatever swaddle I did.  I didn't take them out of the swaddle at night unless I could tell they were wet or dirty and only washed the swaddles about once a week because they would have a onesie underneath.

  • Just want to say this is a great thread because I was struggling with how many/what size swaddles to register for as well. I have Summer Infant swaddlepods (up to 10lbs) and a Miracle Blanket (up to 14 weeks) on my registry. Wasn't sure how long the baby would want to be swaddled and if I should buy bigger sizes, but it looks like I'll hold off at this point.
  • Thank you, everyone! I have a much better idea of what to do now. :)
  • I was excited about swaddling last time but my son hated it! He wouldn't settle unless both hands were touching his head. I hope your baby cooperates better than mine did ;)
  • I loved the ergo baby cocoon and the woombie convertible swaddle. They both zipped up and had snaps at the top so you could have arms out if you wanted. I also used the big Aden & Anais swaddle blankets.

Oh and I totally swaddled my 14 month old earlier this evening because she was freaking out and just needed to calm down. We stopped swaddling like around 7-8 ish months and moved to sleep sacks.

Oh, also good to mention that we swaddled with arms out once she was rolling over.

  • My son hated being swaddled, but I plan to try and swaddle this time around. My mom bought me two swaddle blankets that part looks like a pouch and then you wrap the top part around baby's arms and it velcros closed
  • We are pro-swaddle over here. I used Swaddle me brand. Keep in .ind, when babies can roll from back to front they should be unswaddled, so b/w 4-6 ish months. Safety anf swaddling go hand in hand.
