We have two large pit/boxer breed dogs. They both have become very clingy and more protective of me since I got pregnant. Anyone else have a similar experience?
Omgosh! My Rottweiler has been so annoying!!! Even when I get up to pee for the 5th time in the middle of the night she sits in the bathroom and waits patiently then goes back to bed with me...
Our lab has become extra protective, barking more at people walking past the house and her barks have become more ferocious. We were telling friends last night at a small house party and they noticed that she was always within a foot or two of me at all times, watching and waiting. It's hard for me to help DH take her and our other dog on a walk because they growl at everyone and everything within a block of us. It is a little annoying but makes me very happy she's already protecting the little ones.

I think they notice the hormone smell and changes of your body chemistry. My dog has been a lot more huggy and laying by my side a lot, not sure if they actually understand if you have another human inside of you though? Because I know they can smell sickness such as cancer but the dogs that alert you on that are trained to do so. You know? Either way it's cool to know that they're in tune with your body just as much as you are!!
I read somewhere that they know you're pregnant, just not how many puppies you're having! We have two schnauzers and the one that is "mine" has become a lot more protective of me and rarely leaves my side. The other one is kind of a loner but he's had more moments of being sociable and hanging out in bed with me.
This is a cool post! We have a boxer puppy and he is only 6 months old and I was wondering he if can sense it. I'll be 22 weeks tomorrow and he still jumps around me like crazy when he's happy to see me but I try to avoid him jumping on my stomach obviously.
I was visiting my sister she has a pitbull. It was the first time I met him, being that it was technically her boyfriends dog. He would follow Me every where, he would sit with me and watch me do my makeup, he would sit by the door while I used the bath room. I mean he was attached to me. My sister and her boyfriend said he's usually not like that with some one he just met. So they said jokingly maybe you're pregnant! Lol I didn't think anything of it. Until a month later I did the home pregnancy test, and sure enough... I was!!!! So yes dogs can sense that you are pregnant. Lol I called my sister to tell her and they were so happy and surprised. Funny story to look back on.
I agree my pitbulls can tell, they are extra gentle and 'snuggle' the baby! Plus pitbulls are nanny dogs by nature! I'm 21 weeks and my fuzzy wraps his arms on the sides of my belly and is extra gentle when he rests his head.
I have two little dogs and one was abandon and one is still a youngin 1 year old so until recently hadn't seen any signs that they know. My Pom puppy is usually always around my hubby, he is a boy and they roughhouse which he likes. My little Yorkie girl is always around me and cuddles. But lately whenever I have been sitting on a couch or something my Pom will come up and snuggle right next to me :-) I love it. I'm excited and think they will be good with baby. Yorkie is very protective of me and love kids and runs up to them so excited whenever she sees them. Pom is more of an independent boy but very loyal. They are my babies, it's going to be hard to give up time with them and want to make sure they don't feel excluded!
Our cat has been like that! If I'm sitting in our recliner, she'll jump up and lay on my legs ..then go to sleep lol before I knew about being prego, she would lay right next to my pillow all curled up. I was laughing about it one day and asked my husband what is up with our cat ..then we found out and he said he's guessing she can sense that I'm pregnant. She'll try to get in whichever bathroom I'm in when I'm only in there for about 1-2 minutes. Like she can't stand not being able to see me then she'll rub against me if I leave our bathroom door open until I'm done..
We Have a 5yr old labradoodle and jumps up on me like crazy when he sees me all except when I'm pregnant (my second pregnancy since we adopted him)its hard to believe but before I even knew about the baby he would still get excited when he saw me but just at his usual cue to jump up on me he would sit at my heels and nuzzle my belly instead. So cute!!
My dog is really my DH dog. She clings to him like bark on a tree. But lately she has been sitting closer to me and while I'm on the couch she will lay on the ground next to the couch and when I get up if I go out of her sight she follows. I was really sick in the beginning and spent a lot of time hugging the toilet and she would not leave my side. It's very strange to see this side of her. Especially since the 4 years we have had her she has never cared this much about me.
My 10 month old Doberman has always cuddled me occasionally, but since I've been pregnant it is a nightly thing! He is all about laying on me, & he doesn't do that w my husband even though he loves him maybe eve more than me. I know he can tell something is different about me, but I'm not totally convinced he knows what it is.
Yep. We actually ended up giving our silky terrier to my Inlaws after DS was born. While I was pregnant she would just bark anytime my husband came near me. After the baby was born she would bite my husband anytime he came near either me or the baby.
I have a 2 year old rottie who has be one extremely protective of me since I became pregnant. But I've also got a 14 year old female Boston terrier who has become a vindictive pain in my ass ever since. I work for a veterinarian and I am an animal behavior major in college. I can telly you your animals can sense the pregnancy and will react in accordance to their pack mentality. If your dog sees you as the alpha as my rottie sees me they will be come protetive, however if you dog sees themselves as the alpha your a threat. Hope this helps.
Oh my, I was so hormonal tonight and started crying for no reason and while my husband tried to calm me down my 70 pound fur baby proceeded to climb gently into my lap and lick my chin and nuzzle my face. They know when something's up.
Yes I have never been a fan of dogs but my two friends have two dogs one of them being a larger-than-life Husky and whenever I go over their house the dogs lay right next to me. Normally they don't want to be bothered with anyone but lately we've become best friends it's almost like they are protecting me. Strange and comforting at the same time.
This is such a cute post! My lab mix is also much more protective and clingy. Mine is a female and seems to understand what's going on. It's pretty adorable because it isn't in an aggressive way. Think it's normal.
I have a 9 year old Tibetan Spaniel who started to put his head on my lower belly around 6 weeks. He is definitely more protective of me than before. For example if me and him are sleep on the couch and DH exits his man cave and goes directly as well as quickly to my belly - my dog will growl at him. If I get up to the bathroom in the middle of the night and take too long he comes look for me and wait til I'm done to walk me back to bed. Lately(im almost 22 weeks) he is sniffing my belly. All this is entirely new behavior for him, I've had him since 4 months old.
I'm 23 weeks and we have a male husky that's 9 months old and a 16yr old cat. Cat doesn't stop meowing around me. And puppy seems a lot more relaxed around me instead of jumpy and insane
Does anyone have any advice for introducing a baby to the home with a puppy??
I feel like they can probably pick up on it. My mom's dogs will sometimes come and lay at my feet, and my grandparent's dog laid on the couch with me, even though he wouldn't let me touch him before. It's probably hormones and scent changes, and they can probably pick up on everyone else being extra careful around you, too.
My 6 yr Chihuahua who i thout was clingy b4 hasnt left my side. Im on the loo hes there waiting 2 escort me back, im in the bath he sits on the bathroom unit watchin me, im in bed hes cuddled up on me. Im now 8months & bn put on bed rest & he is always on me usually wif a head or a paw on my massive tummy then wen he gets fed up wif the baby kicking him in the face he moves up to my chest. Even wen he plays wif dad he stops checks on me then goes back or comes straight 2 check on me after a walk. Iv had 2 b careful wif his overprotectivness thou & put him out the way wen dr/nurse visits as he has bn wary of strangers as well as few days in doggy day care so he is away from me & he can rest. Iv read info online from Ceasar Milan (dog whisperer) & Victoria Stillwel (Its me or the dog) on introducing babies which iv found very useful & already started the training & told family members that 1st day home is for baby & puppy bonding only so no visitors which has not went down well but i want wots best 4 them x
lesisk When a person is pregnant, the hormones in their body are likely to alter their scent in some way. So, can dogs sense pregnancy? Because of their keen sense of smell, it's believed by many that a dog can detect a change in a pregnant person even before they do — but it's mostly conjecture
My dog has known everytime I was pregnant before I knew. It usually signifies to me to test. He lays his head on my belly and becomes very clingy and over protective. I got my pregnancy pillow out last week.... he is in dog heaven!!!

I have two dogs (a 100lb golden and 10lb poodle lol) and since before I knew I was pregnant they’ve become attached to me more than normal. Normally the golden sits outside the bathroom while I shower but he INSISTS on being in the bathroom with me with his head on the edge of the tub keeping an eye on me. The poodles always been a snuggled but now she’s even more so- no longer next to me- now she has to be in my lap or on me. They also both started fighting (in a cute way) to be closest to me at night and both INSIST on have a head on MY pillow haha it’s cute until I’m accidentally pawed in the face as they dream haha
I have a 1 yr old Mastiff and she's a bit excited lol she needs to be near me but she is definitely not gentles its like she wants to get into my tummy and find her baby brother 🤣
