Do I need to wash blankets?

I know I have to wash baby clothes...but should I also wash blankets and the swaddling clothes and that stuff?

Yup...washed everything with Dreft...love that smell...softens fabric also when washed
  • I washed everything...you never know who or what has touched the fabric! I used downy free and clear softener as well to help keep it soft :)
  • Someone posted an article in one of the blogs about all the chemicals that are put on fabrics to make them look nice after being packaged for so long. I washed everything, for my first, and I have it all waiting to be washed for my 2nd. Plus, it softens the fabrics.
  • I washed the swaddling blankets, but not all the handmade blankets and quilts I received.
  • I washed it all, just like knowing it's all clean and as others have said, who knows what has touched it before you got it and babies love to put everything in their mouths.
  • My mother in law swears that it's not necessary to wash anything before baby because it helps develop immunity. My mom would argue with her until the sun comes up. It's a tradition in my family to wash EVERYTHING to make sure it's clean and smells great for baby. I even boil bottles and binkis before baby comes. I plan to nurse but of it doesn't work out at least everything will be sanitized

I washed everything including the boppy, car seat cover and all the stuffed animals he recieved. Call me crazy but I think a lot of chemicals and hands touch the product before ending up w your baby.

I washed everything but especially the aden & anais blankets. Washed those 3-4 times because they soften up so much. Also - if you are using cloth diapers are burp cloths (gerber kind or others) they need to be washed/dried for a few cycles for them to become absorbent. I just kept these things in a basket on top of the dyer and every time I did a load of lights I would throw them in!
  • Yes, anything that will be touching baby's skin.
  • I washed everything- I haven't washed stuffed animals though, do any of you?
  • Think about everything being on a concrete factory floor in China with factory workers touching it. I've been in too many factories to not want to wash everything!
  • Why wouldn't you wash it? Seriously why?
  • I get not wanting to wash everything because I have to haul everything to a laundry mat, it's hot, and I'm tired. BUT I am doing it anyways just in case baby is sensitive and like others have said stuff can have a lot of chemicals and icky stuff on it. It's a pain in the ass but I'm doing it anyways. I'm going to wait to wash all the clothes in case he grows quickly and doesn't need all the itty bitty stuff but I'm washing blankets, sheets, etc. And clothes as he needs them.
