Echogentic intracardiac focus

I'm 19w and 4d and i had my anatomy sonogram today. Today was suppose to be a happy day because we are getting a little boy, but the sonogram showed a calcium deposit on the heart. Having EIF is a soft marker for down syndrome. Most things I have read says it clears up and baby will be normal. Have any other moms dealt with this?

Re: Echogentic intracardiac focus

  • I am 19w 2d and had my anatomy scan on Monday. We also found out we are having a little boy! They found an EIF on our precious little one too. They ordered genetic blood work for me to get done but it takes two weeks to get the results. Just want you to know you are not alone. Everything I have read says that it disappears on its own too. It is so hard not to worry though. I will be praying for you and your little one.

  • I did, with my first. I was worried sick but everything I read said it was very common and not to worry. I have a healthy 5 year old now.
  • Thank you so much for the prayers and I will be praying for your bundle of joy as well. It's so heart breaking but God has a purpose for everybody. We just have to keep positive.
  • Same thing with my first and absolutely nothing was wrong! It was actually nice because they monitored me closer and I got to see the little nugget every week!
  • Same thing here for our girl. Found at 20 weeks (I'll be 23 weeks on Friday). There is a lot of reassuring stories and research out there. There is another thread about this too with more people experiencing this. It is a shock, but it will be ok! Thankful this market does not mean there is anything wrong with the heart. I actually googled this, and it is probably one of the least scary pregnancy related searches that you can do. Try not to worry! I know it's easier said than done!
  • I had this with my son! There was a post a little bit ago called "echogenic focus" that I commented a bunch on that will have a lot of info for you as well.

Basically he had two big calcium deposits on his heart, we were referred to a maternal/fetal specialist and everything else looked great and he turned out fine!
On an unrelated note, he was born with a heart murmur, but like I said, they don't believe it was related.
