wanting to start jogging for first time

Hi all,

I'm 17 weeks pregnant and completely inactive aside from walking my dog daily and housework. I'd really like to add some cardio, such as jogging. I've used the c2k app before (couch to 5km), but am uncertain if it's safe for me to try now. I was about 10lbs overweight before getting pregnant and have gained about 15lbs so far. The app really eases you in to the work out. Does anyone have any thoughts on whether this would be a safe entry into cardio?

Thanks for any advice!

Re: wanting to start jogging for first time

  • Best to ask your doctor. My doctor says if you did it pre-pregnancy that it is probably ok to continue provided you listen to your body. I personally would not start jogging. Maybe try a low-impact cardio like the elliptical or a stationary bike

  • I'd love to use an elliptical or bike but don't have a gym membership at the moment and am hesitant to start one since I'm bad about going and end up wasting my money. I'm
not sure of any other low impact cardio that I could do on my own. I'm guessing just power walking?
  • I'd stick to walking. I am a runner, but by week 12 I had to move it inside to the elliptical because the impact caused me to cramp and I had gotten so slow there was almost no point in continuing to run. Yes, many runner moms continue to run throughout pregnancy, but that's probably unlikely for someone who didn't have a consistent running routine pre-pregnancy.

Once you're cleared to work out again post-pregnancy, a couch to 5k program would be a great place to start.
  • Start power walking or add distance to your regular walks.

  • Walk in hilly areas. That will get your heart rate up.
  • Definitely clear it with your doctor if you intend to start it, but I personally wouldn't. Pregnancy relaxes your joints, and you're more likely to injure yourself while jogging when pregnant, especially if you did not have a defined jogging regime beforehand. I am an avid runner (20-30 miles a week), but I had to stop due to spotting during first trimester, and my OB did not want me to resume once the bleeding issue had resolved during second trimester. Plus, with doing C25K, you're going to get to the part where you need to start jogging more when your belly is starting to grow a lot, and that could put a lot of unnecessary stress on your joints.

I would stick to the walking for your cardio. If you are worried about weight gain, ~30 minutes of exercise most days of the week and a healthy diet will help keep it under control.

  • Thanks for all of the advice! I think walking in a hilly area is a great suggestion.
  • Agree with @SnarkasaurusRex, I tore my hip labrum running before I got pregnant and needed surgery (I've always had loose joints). Running injuries are no fun! I walk hills and hike, and get plenty of cardio that way :)
