Gift for big brother

I am scheduled to have a c-section August 3rd (but hoping to go into labor on my own before then) with my second. I have a 3 and a half year old son at home who is SO excited for his little sister to arrive. I thought that he would be jealous of all the gifts she's been getting but he is just happy for her and loves looking at all of her new things. Because of how amazing he has been with baby sisters presents, I would really like to have a present for him from her and maybe one from his daddy and myself at the hospital for when he meets her. I want him to feel special too and appreciated. Any suggestions? I don't want it to be anything super expensive (as he is just as excited about a truck from a yard sale as he is about a brand new bike). He loves trucks, baseball, football, peppa pig, Mickey Mouse clubhouse, Daniel tigers neighborhood, and music.

Re: Gift for big brother

  • Each time I get something small at the store for my baby boy, I grab something she wants as well (nothing more than 5 dollars). I have a 3 and a half yr old as well and I have this SAME feeling you do. Once her brother is born we're going to get her something big, she's into dresses and tutus, so I'll make her one and give it to her there so she'll feel as special as she is to me.

  • How about a big brother shirt and a superhero cape?
  • Love the idea of a superhero cape, I second that idea!  It could even say something like "super big brother".  We're giving our daughter a necklace that says "when a baby is born so is a big sister".  I think it's a great idea to remind the older kids that they're getting a special new role in the family along with the arrival of baby.
  • Check out pinterest for ideas too.

I plan on giving DD, who is 2 1/2, a big sister book.  I am also thinking of getting her a t shirt, a new baby, and/or her own baby carrier so she can wear her dolls when I wear her little brother.

A friend even had a "birthday party" with cupcakes in the hospital to celebrate with her DD when her son was born.

  • We went to a sibling class yesterday and they just suggested anything that would keep an older sibling busy while you are busy feeding. A new coloring book and crayons, stickers, puzzles if they can do them on their own. Another suggestion off topic was to have some small snack bags prepared or easy snacks for them kept somewhere they can reach them so when you are busy they can help themselves.
  • We got our boys "Big Brother" shirts for the big day. My mom is probably going to get them hot wheels and pokemon cards to keep them happy while we're at the hospital.
  • We got DS a gift from his new sister. Its basically things he can play with while we're stuck in the hospital: stickers, little cars, a coloring book... Then my mom also got him a bunch of little cheap gifts and wrapped them. That way, as people come to the house with a gift for the baby, we can have a gift for him too!
  • Probably small and you're likely wanting something bigger, but our soon to be big sister loves the episode where Daniel tiger gets a new sister! She constantly wants to watch it so I ordered this Daniel Tiger book "the baby is here" along with some other little goodies! Might be something you could get to go with his gift!

  • So far my guys have big brother shirts, new coloring books, books about "new baby." And I'll get them some kind of favorite treat. I also let my big guy.. 4 y/o pick out something for baby sister... He of course kicked "Skye" the girl pup from Paw Patrol.

  • I just bought DD her own cute little backpack that I'm going to put some trinkety things in... Stickers, "jewelry" other little things that will hopefully keep her busy and entertained for a little while :)
  • I've been thinking about this too. So far I've thought I'll get DD a doctors kit (since she will see me getting poked and prodded during the hospital stay, and lately has been to the doc a couple of times so has been practising 'medicine' on me and her toys), and maybe some accessories for a baby doll she has (bottle, nappies etc).

Will put together a bag of trinkets from the $2 shop - things like stickers, activity books, new story books and whatnot, like other PPs have mentioned, that would keep her entertained for a bit while I'm occupied.

Another idea I liked was having a 'big sister party.' We would do this when the in laws come to visit which will be about two months after baby is born. I think this will be good timing as DD will be needing some extra attention then! I'd start talking about it after baby is born to build it up, though it'd just be a small family shindig with my parents and in laws, and my brother's family (which we would do when the ILs visit anyway), but we would get a cake and some candles to make DD feel special. no doubt the ILs will bring presents over for her, so she would also have something to open and get excited about.
  • I love the super hero cape idea! I ordered this and a face mask. I'll have a few snacks and this at the hospital to give our 2.5 year old when he comes to meet his brother!
