Newborn Diaper Stash

I'm trying to determine how many NB size diapers to buy now in preparation for baby. I have a large stash of size 1 diapers but I don't want to buy too many NB in case baby is big and starts fitting in size 1 early. We are doing a combo of cloth and Honest Company diapers at first to try cloth out so that's another wrench in the plan. Any ideas for us??

Re: Newborn Diaper Stash

  • I am doing the exact same thing and was having the exact same delema! I currently only have 1 pack of NB, but I will get more. I just don't want to spend too much on NB and end up not using them. Especially since honest co is a little pricier than other brands. I did get a coupon for 25% off honest co, so I plan to do a bulk order. Either way I'm sure it'll work out. At least you have enough to get you through until you can pick up more. Good luck mommy!!! ;)

I have three packs of NB, I believe we used 3-4 with DS1. As mentioned, most stores do let you return even without a receipt. I took a bunch to target and they only rejected one pack because it wasn't sold at their store.

  • I have two packs of NB diapers. If baby ends up not fitting them at all than I'll just re-gift them at a baby shower with a diaper cake :)
  • We had 2 80-packs of NB diapers as we eased into cloth with DS.

  • Ditto. I have a box that I already put in the diaper organizer that hangs o5f the crib, and one more box, and smaller packages of NB. Lots of size 1, few size 2 (all were given to us at our baby shower).
Having the Target, Walmart, Babies r Us app help so u can scan the diapers to see if it was purchased they're before attempting to exchange.
  • Anyone doing CD in the hospital? I was just gifted a stash of newborn size ones and I'm wondering if it's worth it to bring them or to just use disposable as we had planned to? With DD we did disposable until we got home and she was big enough for the one-size. Now I'm wondering if bringing the newborn sized ones with us is more trouble than it's worth? Advice would be awesome!
  • Cloth wise I have about 15 newborn diapers.

@travelmama I will not be taking CD to the hospital.  #1 we will only be there around 24 hours. #2 Washing out meconium is a pain  #3 Just one more thing to take and bring and I really try to limit what I bring with me

  • @gotdiesel2007 Do you plan on cloth and disposable combo or only cloth? I have a bunch of prefolds that I hope will fit newborn but otherwise I don't have any newborn specific CDs. Should I get some?

@travelmama Same here - I'm not bringing cloth to the birth center. I was considering it but I don't think I want to deal with that right at birth.
  • @ktyrd007   Only cloth here. This is baby #3 so I'm pretty set. As far as sizes that is all going to depend on your baby. My kids are always thin and long and there is no way a one size would fit them from the get go.

  • I have one big box of newborn pampers swadlers and then I'll switch to ones. Figured that's all I'd need. I can always get more if I need to.

    We are. :)

Newborns don't need many diapers in the early days but I packed a diaper bag with some newborn cloth and a wet bag. I also did pack some natural disposables (I have ONE 26-pack of newborn disposables and that's it) in case we use up all our diapers, but I plan on starting cloth with baby's first diaper.

We have some fleece liners (I've also heard Viva paper towels work) to line the diapers with so they don't get meconium stains for the first few poops.

I'll just toss the diapers in the laundry when we get home.

  • I did three dozen Green Mountain Newborn size and three dozen of the Smalls, with one pack each of the Honest disposables (want to use cloth as much as possible). I have 45 cloth diaper wipes and two hundred gallons worth of CDW solution mix. I also got two 720-pack cases of WaterWipes to have on hand.
  • And 10 liners, 8 diaper covers in each size.
  • @travelmama We're just using the hospital diapers while we're there since it won't be very long anyway, but we're bringing a cloth diaper that matches his coming home outfit to leave the hospital. Silly, I know, but we're first timers and we can't help ourselves. :P

We're using a combo of cloth and disposables while he's a newborn, and when he's big enough to fit the one sizes, we'll do exclusive cloth. Right now we only have one small pack of newborn diapers because we're not sure how many we'll need to supplement our cloth stash while he's in them.

I cloth diapered my first, and agree he wouldn't fit in a one size from the get go. We didn't have any NB specific CD though, so we used disposable until he fit in the one size.
  • Hubby had a diaper party and we got a bunch of different sizes!! But we did get about 8-10 packages of newborn diapers. I have re-gifted a few packs to others who just had a baby. I will probably try to exchange what I don't use for a bigger size. As a FTM I'm really unsure how many were going to need so I'm not making any moves yet!
  • Thank you ladies!!! I'm gonna leave them home I think. The idea of accumulating diapers as soon as I am home is a little daunting!

We live in a big city and know with having two older kids we won't be home-bodied for very long. I got one jumbo pack of newborn and a box of size 1. They're estimating baby to be on the bigger side (90th percentile) so I figure if they're wrong and babe is closer to 7/8 lbs we can always pick up another box!
  • I only bought one box of NB + whatever NB diapers the hospital will send home with us. The rest I've gotten are sizes 1 & 2.
