Insurance rant

i am so frustrated with our insurance system. Before we moved from wa I had insurance and got pregnant. When we found out we would have to relocate to AZ I called and asked what I needed to apply for insurance in that state. They said an ID and address. We moved and I got the items and now they are saying I should have applied before moving since now I have to wait another month to be accepted before making an apt. Now I am going to be 32 wks pregnant, last time I went was at me 22wk apt. Just stressful and annoying how you can't get one straight answer for anyone!

Re: Insurance rant

  • That is nuts! You'd think they'd be able to speed things up knowing that you're in your 3rd trimester and haven't been to a doctor in over two months. When your other insurance ended, did you have the option to pick up COBRA insurance? Usually you have 30 days after your insurance is terminated to enroll in COBRA. That would at least fill in the gap until you're able to get on the new insurance.

  • Is this private insurance through work or state exchange?
  • Can't you just pay out of pocket for one or two visits? I know its not ideal but it isn't that expensive, you can use a plan if you need to and at least you would have peace of mind.

DH just started his full time position after graduating so we have paid for most of my pregnancy out of pocket until a few weeks ago. It wasn't so outrageous for the monthly check ups. The labs and scans are what are really costly.
  • I had private insurance but it was only good in Washington and Oregon. So they told me to cancel and reapply when I was a resident of AZ. I don't know what COBRA is, I will look into it! I could pay out of pocket but honestly we can not afford it and we have nothing baby wise we need yet. This move kind of drained us and my husbands work is slow. Just stressful
  • I'm sorry! Dealing with insurance is never fun! We were kind of in the same boat, not exactly. My DH got laid off from his work, busted his a$$ finding other better jobs. Then two of the three jobs that tried to higher him had a '90 day wait for benefits to kick in'. FRUSTRATING. Cobra was going to cost us a fortune because in that 90 days I would be giving birth to our son! So, we were just going to waiting out the lay off since we couldn't be without insurance. But as some giant miracle, the third place he interviewed just called and offered him an amazing position(big promotion from his last job), and said 'benefits start on day ONE of your work'!!!! It's been an emotional month and a half for us while he was laid off, and being offered good jobs that he has had to turn down for insurance coverage reasons. Thank God it all came together. I know it will for you, also!

Can you go to a Planned Parenthood type place and get a free exam/check up?? Maybe call and explain to them the situation? Have you established a new OB/GYN yet? I would call them and see if they have a payment plan or rate plan just so you can get an appointment in while you're waiting?! GOOD LUCK!! Don't give up!
  • I like LoveLee85's idea.  See if there's a PP or pregnancy center near you.   Many will do free or reduced cost visits.  It should at least give you some peace of mind!
