smoking

Okay so ive read it takes 95 mins for nicotine to get out of your system does anyone know if this is accurate? Ive had a few cigarettes and waited to breastfeed until the next day and i also dont know how much do you have to pump before you feed the baby? Has anyone else had this problem?

I haven't smoked yet or properly googled this but i do want to know the answer to this, i'm a social smoker

  • Per my pedi you should smoke right after feeding but only 0.01 percent of the nicotine passes to your milk so even if baby needs to eat and you just smoked baby will be fine.

  • Don't forget to change clothes and wash hands before feeding. Smoke is still a SIDS risk especially when they're all cuddled up with you.
  • Hmm I had no idea! With my first I started socially smoking when she was 1 but I was still breastfeeding....in any event she's 3 now and no allergies, Athsma, nothin'

  • I quit a few months before I got pregnant, I'm scare to start back up since I have no self control. With DS being so darn fussy due to reflux, I feel crazy sometimes and want one.
  • I change my clothes before picking her up and i always smoke when im not near her or wont be home for awhile. Ive only had 4 cigarettes in a stretch of time. I also always pump afterwards. I have been nervous to smoke or drink since ive had her but she has been fine. And i don't drink or smoke everyday or all the time or around her. I just sometimes need one so i always make sure im nowhere near her. And another question i have is when she sleeps i know they say not to put a blanket in with her but is it okay if she cant grab things yet ? I mean i dont think she could grab it to put it over her face by accident right? And she sleeps on her back but she rolls onto her side most times but doesnt go anywhere else.
  • Even if she can't grab, do not put a blanket in with the baby. She could reflexively grab it or somehow roll or otherwise smother herself with it. If she needs more layers you could swaddle or use a warm sleep sack.
  • Don't put a blanket in. As PP said she could grab by reflex. Or just because she can't grab yet doesn't mean she won't and you won't know when that will start. We have watched my LO pick up a toy or blanket and put it over his face (while playing not sleeping so we were right there watching). You never know when they'll learn to do something like this.
  • Okay so my next question is after you smoke or drink should you pump right away or do you have to wait the 2-3 hours?
  • With alcohol you don't need to pump and dump to get rid of it. It leaves your breastmilk just like it leaves your blood stream. You only need to pump and dump for your own comfort (if you're engorged). As for nicotine, I have no idea, but I don't see how smoking could ever be safe while breastfeeding.
  • I'm just glad OP didn't ask about smoking pot and breastfeeding.... Yep I heard that one the other day....
  • No need to pump and dump just like alcohol the nicotine is out of your system in about 90 min. Kellymom.com has a good article about smoking and breastfeeding but if you still have questions ask your pedi.

I was told by the lactation consultants that if you can still feel the effects of alcohol (or caffeine) then wait to feed your baby. One or two beers won't hurt (unless it's hitting you hard!). I use Mayo health clinic online search for stuff. They say to wait 2-3 hours after but I've had a couple beers here or there and my baby is still alive. Lol! Plus beer helps your lactation!
  • Thank you ladies. And how does it help your lactation?
  • Not all beers help. It's the barley and hops.

  • And the brewer's yeast - that's why it's an ingredient in most lactation cookies.  I hate beer, but I've been making cookies, and putting some in my morning oatmeal with flax (both also good for lactation).
