I need advice ladies

i went to the dr with my LO yesterday because he seemed like he wasn't gaining weight. His last appointment was 6/5 and he gained 14oz in two weeks. This time he only gained 9oz in 25 days or something like that. I was told to wake him every four hours to feed him. I am giving him both breasts because I am breast feeding and then right after that I have to give him 1 to 2 oz of formula as a supplement because some how my supply went down.... I was put on the "mini pill" on 6/17. I started taking it 6/21. Then they LC said to stop taking it and see if that helps. I am using fuengreek and eating oatmeal. Then I was told to wake him up every 4 hours to feed him. I feel so bad when I have to wake him because when I did it seemed like he wasn't really hungry. He would wake himself up when he was hungry and then he would really eat. I don't know what to do. My gut tells me to let him sleep..... I am so confused and stressed out about this.

  • I'm confused. You think there is something wrong with you LO so you take him to the dr then you don't want to follow the Drs advice?

I honestly don't know, a doctor once told me to put DD on an eating schedule and when i tried to wake her to feed she simply wouldn't eake up long enough to latch properly! So i understand what you're saying

Would it work if you tried to feed him more than once in his awake time? As in create cluster feeding? I don't know about it's affect medically but it would be something i'd try.
  • People tell me never wake a sleeping infant. I just wanted to see what you all think. I am doing what the dr said but I feel bad waking him up. Also i was wondering about if the mini pill decreases milk supply.
  • Wake him. He needs to eat. And count your lucky stars that your LO sleeps well haha
Also try Goats Rue as a supplement.

The mini pill should not decrease supply but as with every medication, there are side effects and different people are effected differently. How old is your LO? If you are going greater than 4 hours between feedings and are still less than 6 weeks pp, your milk supply may not be regulated and you may need to increase the demand (pump if LO goes a Long time between feedings).
  • Wake him!! I thought the same thing about never wake a sleeping baby but my doctor told me that some babies sleep more when hungry because they are conserving what little energy they have. In other words they could be too hungry to even cry :-(. Don't risk it!!!
  • @nursej519 my LO is 8 weeks old. Even when he was born we had to wake him up to feed him. Then he gained 14oz in two weeks and they were happy about the weight gain. Then I thought things were going good and he was gaining, but my sister and my mom thought he was still little because I would constantly feed him on demand. As of yesterday he only gained 9oz in 25 days. I am 8 weeks PP. so now I am back to waking him up to feed. He was 6 lbs 14oz when he was born 20 inches long. He's now 8lbs 9oz 22 inches long.
  • We actually wake DS every two hours during the day (per our pediatrician's recommendation), and then he's eating enough, and he sleeps longer stretches at night then.  We don't wake him during the night though!

If your doc says to wake him, do it.  Don't listen to anyone else's advice when it's a concern about your kid not getting enough to eat!  If he gets crazy fussy from a lack of sleep or something, then certainly bring that up with your doctor again.  But when we wake DS up, he slowly wakes up, eats and then goes back to sleep pretty quickly, so it's not like he's missing out on much sleep or anything.
  • Thank you I feel better now. I just wish things were going better. Hopefully he will gain what he has to so I don't have to wake him at night as well.
  • Is he just sleeping too much? My DD was losing weight because I have a low supply but did not know so I wasn't supplementing. I pump after every feeding and I supplement with pumped breast milk and formula if needed. My pediatrician told me to add a teaspoon of formula to every 2-3oz of pumped breast milk to make each oz higher calorie. My DD went from 6lbs 13oz to 7lbs 5oz in 3 days. I don't wake my daughter because she won't eat she will latch then fall asleep. But I was told the saying "never wake a sleeping baby" doesn't apply to newborns.
  • He sleeps at least 6-7 hours during the night. He is gaining weight but not what he should be. So i am supplementing with formula after I feed him
