Too chicken to try castor oil

Hi everyone! I'm 38 weeks and 3 days, had my membranes swapped today. I am 2cm dilated but cervix is still thick :( my doctor recommended I try castor oil to jump start labor, but I did some googling now I'm too chicken to try it. Anyone had any success stories with castor oil?

  • That's why I'm not going to try it, even if it's a 1 in a million chance it might harm baby, that's enough for me not to take it.
  • Please don't! It's dangerous!
  • I don't agree that it's dangerous but I would never do it at 38 weeks! I consider it a last ditch desperate measure to try at 41w5d to avoid an induction but would never even consider it before then!
  • Not chicken, sensible. If you were 42 weeks I'd understand considering having castor oil but it should never be taken, my midwife had a horror story of a woman who, every time she pushed had diahorea too. Don't do it.
  • I was visiting my doctor 38+4 and he was telling me about options to jumpstart labor, but at the same time he wouldn't do anything before I reach 41 weeks and we are talking about stripping membranes.. Castor oil sounds terrible, can't believe any doctor suggesting that..
  • My grandmother and MIL swear by castor oil . Although, they had good reason...both had husbands in the military and they wanted to have their babies on a certain weekend when the hubbies were home. It worked for both of them. Neither one went into details about it though.
  • My mom drank castor oil because I was 2 weeks late (they let you go that long overdue back then) ;-) and she said all it did was make her throw up & have diahreea. And when she thought the runs had stopped she took her dog for a walk & ended up messing her pants a block and a half away from home! I don't think I would try it either.
  • With all the stuff that comes out during labor a little poop isn't a big deal and is expected. That being said I would never risk drinking castor oil and shitting the bed in such a way my husband would never let me forget it.
    Don't do it!
  • I also heard that the baby could poop while he's inside you. I would never try it not worth it.

Don't do it! I tried castor oil with my second after going past my due date. It made me dehydrated. I had multiple nurses try multiple times to get my IV started when I did go into labor. It was awful!
  • My midwife said that it does work sometime but it totally isn't worth it. She said it makes most people violently sick.
