Cloth Diapers- what kind and how many?

Subject line says it all haha! FTM here and am a bit overwhelmed with options! I read bum genius is good? Ah idk!

Doing disposable newborns tho. Any advice or insight is appreciated.

Re: Cloth Diapers- what kind and how many?

  • I'm going to be using BumGenius - that is what my sister uses for my nephew and she likes them. She told me that around 25 diapers is what you need to have if you want to avoid doing laundry every single day (I think most cloth diapering moms launder their diapers every other day to every three days).

  • Hey there! I'm a FTM too. Baby boy due October 13!!! :) Anywho, I'm planning on using disposables for the first week (because of the "clean out" period) and then using cloth. I've already purchased the Rumparooz covers (they are just SO adorable!) and plan on getting Ozocozy prefolds. From my research and discussions with other moms who have cloth diapered, the all-in-ones are nice, but take a longer time to assemble and dry. I'm planning on getting 24-30 and doing laundry every other day. I have a friend who left hers for three days and it was quite stinky! Haha. I hope this helps. There are also some really great blogs that I've found on Pinterest that may help too. :)
  • I have rumparooz covers Amazon with fitted prefolds from green mountain diapers. I'm having twins. I'm starting with 30 prefolds but may have to get more. I don't remember how many covers I have. Maybe around 8 or so? One of my friends recommended this combo for me for the newborn stage.
  • I'm a FTM doing cloth diapering too! I'm planning to do disposables during the newborn stage as well since most of the one-size cloth diapers start at 8, 9, or 10lbs. I've heard most cloth diapering veterans suggest you try several brands as one may work better for you/your baby than it did for another mom. I've gotten quite a few off Zulily when they have them posted since they're usually about $10-12 each! A lot of moms seem to prefer the all-in-one diapers. You can add another insert for extra absorption if need be! I really hope I'm able to stick with the cloth diapering! :)

  • Im going to do gdiaoets. FTM though so i dont know for sure if they work well, but i read lots of reviews!
  • It really depends.  If you go with all in ones you need more.  If you use covers you'll need fewer covers and a bunch of inserts.  I really like just simply baby brand:

They are sometimes on zulily.  I think in general 20 is recommended (especially bc newborns go through a lot), but I honestly have no idea how many I have.  I just wash as needed.

  • I am using bum genius and rumparooz! I have a friend who has had VERY good luck with these two brands but not as much luck with others. I am going to get started with 24 and see how that goes first:)

Just some advice from my friend, she says she loves bumgenius in the daytime but her only complaints are that they do NOT go as small as newborn and you can NOT dry these in your dryer. Rumparooz are more expensive but are worth is for night time especially. These are able to be dried in the dryer, and go small enough to fit your newborn!

Take a look at Grovia:) They have a snap in insert that allows you to use the water proof cover a few times before having to change or until it gets soiled. They use a verity of different material (organic to synthetic) for the soaker pads as well as blends. The hybrid is the best option I could find as there is no stuffing involved:) I'm planning on getting the velcro option because it seems like it's be a better fit for baby. I just think it's the closest you can get to disposables in terms of convenience.
And they just came out with a new line of epic prints!!

    Wacky

A word to the wise if you plan on going with a synthetic blend soaker pad, do not dry in the dryer!! The heat will cause the fibers to loose their absorbency. If you're going full time get 1/2 organic, 1/2 synthetic and plan to line dry the synthetic blend:)

If you're wanting to just try out cloth diapers, they have an inexpensive Experience Package!!
Hybrid Experience Package - Organic Cotton

Hybrid Experience Package - Organic Cotton

    $64.62

Or if you're looking to just test drive the Grovia brand, they have an epic Tester Kit!
GroVia® Magic Stick All-Natural Diaper Balm
    28 Review(s)
    $20.00

As I'm sure you can tell I love this brand and I bet you will too:)

  • We are doing bamboo prefolds, thirsties covers. Also looking into Blueberry. They have awesome reviews on a cloth diaper board I belong to. Also going to do some AIO as well. Mixed reviews on rumparooz leaking, and g diapers not fitting very well so we have stayed away from those and microfiber. I was warned to just try a few companies since every baby is different.

I'm a ftm and doing cloth. I've ordered a rumparooz cover, an Alva baby pocket, and a ecoable aio. I also bought some newborn fitted diapers and covers and some prefolds and two Lil joeys from a friend. I was going to skip the newborn stage but I got 11 diapers for 60 bucks! I couldn't pass that up.
I'm slightly obsessed with YouTube reviews on all the brands lol I'm a little too excited to use cloth :D
  • @BrooklynBroussard Mine was deleted too! Wtf. That video and website is perfect!
  • Definitely try to find tutorials or CD videos online that explain the pros and cons of each type!
I personally don't like the idea of stuffing liners (or pulling out dirty liners) or snapping in and out liners, etc so we are going with AIO bum genius Free time and charlie banana AIOs! Hoping to have about 30 total. More dry time and more expensive but I think the pros outweigh the cons for our lifestyle! Plus, I want to make it easier on daycare.
  • I thought green mountain diapers had the clearest info about cloth diapering and all the options. As a FTM I may have gone overboard:
    - at least 8 covers plus some wool ones
    - 3 dozen newborn prefolds
    - 3 dozen small prefolds
    - 1 dozen newborn workhorses
    - 1 dozen small workhorses
    - 8 dozen wipes
I am almost positive that no one needs this much for one baby, but I would be anxious if I had bought less. If you're not as neurotic as I am though try to save yourself some money. :)

We bought 15 alva baby covers and 2 dozen osocozy prefolds. We intend to use them with a snappy while she's a newborn, then hopefully the same as the flip system (but much cheaper) when she's a bit bigger.
  • @ulmer98 did your friend use the bumgenius/rumparooz pocket diapers or all in ones?

I think the pre-folds seem like a bit of a hassle, and the pocket ones and all in ones seem easier...? With AOI you don't need anything extra, but with pocket you need to separately buy inserts, right? I'm reading these websites and trying to get a clear picture! Yet am so confused...
  • Also, I'm looking on amazon...sometimes the AOI are a few dollars less than the pocket- so the benefit to the pocket is that you can add additional inserts for wetness?
  • Stm I really like Alva & sunbaby pocket diapers.. Only complaint is after my daughter got a little older the mf would no longer absorb enough so we switched to using a prefold as an insert. Baby #2 Im planning on doing a combination of pocket & covers with Bamboo inserts. Also a lot of cloth diapering Mommas will tell you it's not worth the money/hassle for newborn cd.. It may be just as good to use sposies until they will fit into a normal cd. Again just my opinion, and what I've heard from friends. :)

Yes! One of the benefits of a pocket diaper is that you can stuff it however. But, you can also add liners to increase absorbancy in an AIO (or some have sewn in liners that you can fold different ways to increase absorbancy where baby needs it most). Charlie banana makes a "hybrid" AIO that has a pocket and each diaper comes with two liners, no need to buy them seperate ($21 each for that style)

@kim1288 Another perk of pocket diapers are since you can take the liner out, they dry faster. Same with the AIO with sewn in flap - type liners.(like bumgenius freetime)
  • Covers and prefolds were easiest for me. I also have a few one size Pocket diapers that I loved. I HATED (passionately) Grovia. My next least favorite were g-diapers, both leaked terribly. You also can rarely reuse the shells even though they sell it like you can. Urine almost always gets on the shell and poop always does, so you need a lot more shells than they lead you to believe. The disposable inserts they have are fine but do not hold enough urine to get through nap time, and forget night time. There are also lots of more trim fitting options than Grovia and g-diapers. Stay far far away from the hybrids and in at in some that actually work well!

I'm a FTM and I am registering for many different kinds. We are going to try different ones out to see what we like, but my sister loves Thirsties and uses them exclusively. You can get them on Target and Amazon.

I'm lazy and will be using the BG Freetime diapers.
  • Ftm, using funkyfluff AIOs and some pocket diapers (brand unknown) that were given to me. For the newborn stage we are renting bumgenius newborn size diapers from our local cloth diaper store until baby boy fits in his own diapers.
We have about 30 diapers total, which im told is enough to last 2-3 days at a time, depending on baby's age.

We are also going into this with an open mind that we may change how we end up doing things depending on how it goes.
  • Great ideas! I think I'm going to register for a couple AOIs and Pockets...but omg they are so much less $$ on Ebay!!!

Now...how are y'all storing the dirties? I'm reading there are two options: 1. wet bags (washable? or how do they get clean?) 2. diaper pails (with some sort of liner you have to buy, then wash?)
  • We are going with prefolds and covers. I put a bunch of Thirsties covers on our registry. We also have some g-diapers but I'm not expecting much.

  • @kim1228 we are doing wet bags for when we are out and need to store a dirty diaper until we get home. The one we have is machine washable. At home we are doing a garbage can with a liner that is washable with the diapers. That way you can dump the entire thing in the wash without having to touch all the dirty diapers. Has a spot for essential oils on it too, to help with the smell (and won't touch the diapers to get oil in them).
  • @millette2015 - what kind of wet bags/liners are you buying? I'm worried (obviously, more like obsessing!) that the liner I get won't fit in the pail...or I'll buy a wet bag that leaks lol
  • I came across some cloth diapers today, and decided to check out eBay I found lots of cheap diapers on there ... They have inserts, this is all new to me, I never used cloth diapers with my previous son.. So how many diapers and liners would I need ?
  • Here is what he have/will be getting:

    1. 24 bumGenius 4.0 one-size stay-dry cloth diapers ($430.80)

    2. Spray pal and diaper sprayer bundle

    3. 14 gallon cloth diaper pail

    4. 2 planet wise diaper pail liners (fit the diaper pail very well!)

    5. 1 wet bag for the diaper bag (10" X 12")

    6. Honest company (BPA free!) wipes dispenser

    7. 45 flannel wipes (which we will store in the wipes dispenser with a homemade solution made from water and a few drops of baby wash)

    8. Zippered on the go wipes case (to hold flannel wipes for on the go)

In addition to these things we will use coconut oil for diaper rashes (but will use disposable liners when we use the coconut oil) and Purex free and clear laundry detergent for washing (I confirmed via email with cottonbabies.com that this is safe for bumGenius diapers)
  • @amberrmariee20 This blog has been really helpful for me:

I also have a great cloth diaper store in my area and the ladies there have been great with helping me find a system that will work with my lifestyle.  I have also heard that some babies react differently to different fabrics and sizes so I bought about half of what I think I'll need.  Once baby comes, I'll figure out what works for us and then stock up on the rest.

I've discovered the absolute best cloth diaper group on fb. It's fluff love and cd science. Those ladies can help with any questions or issues about anything cd.
