Nervous about baby number two.

My DH and I are TTC baby number two and I am really nervous about BF'ing. With my first child I tried everything under the sun to try and BF but my supply never fully came in, and she never latched correctly. I really want to be successful with the second baby. I am wondering if any one has had problems BF'ing with their first but were able to with their second. I am reading up on things I can do and I am changing my diet. I just want some piece of mind and hope for successful BF"ing!

Re: Nervous about baby number two.

  • My sister. She planned to give birth at home and EBF. LO#1 was early so was born in the hospital and didn't suck well... so after many frustrating weeks my sister gave up. Then came LO#2 who was born at home and BF like a champ from the 1st hour! I don't believe my sister made any overt changes; circumstances were different.

  • One of my best friends breasted her first without problems but not the second. So even though she had practice, it didn't work out with her younger daughter. Each kid is different.

I too had problems BFing with my first due to cesarean complications. But the second was VBAC and started BFing immediately. Like previous replies said each child is different .
  • Yes! I have been there. I tried so hard for four months to breastfeed my daughter (firstborn). She didn't gain weight properly, she never latched properly, she would scream when I tried to put her to breast, and I ultimately gave up and switched her to formula.
Now, my second baby, has been EBF for three months now. He does amazing! We have no problems whatsoever! He latches well, my supply is steady, everything is going as it should.
What I did differently the second time:
    1. I was much more determined.
    2. I knew what I was doing when it comes to care of a newborn, so I was not nearly as overwhelmed.
    3. I did not have PPD like I did with my first baby.
    4. ASK FOR HELP! I was nervous to leave the house with my first. With my son, I went to see a LC three times in the beginning until he latched perfectly. I was not giving up!
    5. Confidence is key. Do not let what happened with your first baby bring you down. I beat myself up about not being able to successfully nurse my daughter. It truly did me no good. I have told myself since day one with my son, that this is another chance and I can do it.
    6. Remember that all babies are different. My daughter hated nursing. My son loves it! All babies personalities are different, so this time around everything may go 100% differently!

Good luck to you! You can definitely do this. :)
  • I agree 100% that all babies are different. My first born didn't latch well so we formula fed. My second latched well and I've been EBF for over a week now (since her birth). I had milk with both babies but with #2 I started drinking Mother's Milk tea 3x/day since day 1 just in case. I have no idea if it has helped my supply or if I would have done well without it though. Best of luck!

  • Each child is different. Maybe consider trying to join a LLL group in your area for additional support and advice. Kellymom's website has a ton of useful information- there are many foods and supplements to take that will increase your supply.

I really liked the Mother's Milk Tea, and having oatmeal for breakfast (almost) every day!

  • Seconding joining La Leche League, you can start going to meetings as soon as your pregnant. It's a great group to get the support you need.

HolLynns post was a good one as well!
