Fenugreek

So, I definitely have low supply... I EP and am lucky to get about 12 oz a day... so I have to supplement a good amount, which I hate. I've tried Fenugreek at the recommendation of my pediatrician, and just recently finished the bottle but didn't notice any difference with it. Well now I'm reading that if your sweat and urine dont smell like maple syrup then it's not working and you should up your dosage.

I'm wondering if I didn't take enough... I would take about 6 a day and could sometime taste the maple on my breath but never smelled it on my body. Has anyone experienced success with Fenugreek? Did you sweat and pee syrup?? Wondering if I should try another bottle.

TIA!

Re: Fenugreek

  • My LC doesn't like it because you have to take an extreme amount to notice a difference.  Not sure why that's bad...

  • My LC told me to take 3 pills 3x a day. I definitely notice the maple smell! I'm not sure it's working either but I've been taking it since 1 week postpartum and I'm afraid to stop now!
  • I apparently need to up my dosage after reading this. I take 2 pills 3 a day. Maybe 3 pills 3 a day? I don't smell or taste it at all. I hope this works!
  • I took 5-6 pills a day and noticed a huge difference & smelled like syrup for sure. I had to stop taking them because I got mastitis but plan to start taking them again as soon as I get a new better breast pump.

I was on it for a week. My armpits smelled like maple syrup and my LO's poops smelled buttery. I went off fenugreek bc if you have a thyroid problem, fenugreek can interfere with it. I've done a lot of research on fenugreek and while it works for some moms, it can have opposite effect and decrease supply with other moms.

As a low producer EP who just became a "just enough" producer yesterday, I understand your struggle. I tried every single thing possible. What has worked for me is power pumping and acupuncture. Happy to share more details if you're interste
  • I use the tea with my first child and it worked too well! I had too much milk and had to stop.
  • Thanks everyone... I will grab another bottle and give it a second try.
  • Also, can you ladies tell me which brands you are using? I started with Gaia Herbs 60 count pills but they were $25 a bottle which is crazy to me so I have switched to My Brest Friend 100 count bottle with is like $8 a bottle just to see if there was a difference. So far I don't notice anything.
  • I have been using the drop form and I find it works better. Tastes like something from your baby's diaper but it totally works. I also swear by lactation cookies. If you google you can find a few different recipes. Brewers yeast, oatmeal, and flax seed are the ingredients that make the cookies work.
  • How many cookies do you eat a day, and for how many days?
  • Also, just make oatmeal for breakfast with added Brewer's yeast & flax meal if you don't want to pay for/make cookies.  I do 3 cups milk, 1 cup rolled oats, 3tbs flax, 1tbs Brewer's yeast - the proportions seem equivalent to the cookie recipes, and gives me 3 good breakfasts.

I'm also taking domperidone, and it's helped the most.  My fenugreek is a Special Mother's Milk blend pill, from a health food store and also has milk thistle and goat's rue.  Some people say their doctor won't prescribe domperidone, but I'd say try if you're concerned about supply.

  • My midwife told me to take fenugreek and blessed thistle together 3 pills each 3 times a day. I actually found a bottle at the store that was a "super pill" which contained high dosages of both and I didn't have to take as many pills that often and it worked for me. I only took it for a little bit to up my supply and I haven't taken it since.
