FYI, this just happened today in California. Not sure how I feel about it yet, although we do plan to fully vaccinate our daughter.

I am personally great with this. For states like California I think it makes a lot of sense. They have a lot of foreign tourists and tourists from around the U.S. and any kind of outbreak can spread quickly, as seen with their measles outbreak. Best to make sure all kids at school are protected, no matter your stance on vaccination.

Agreed. People can make their own decisions, but if the kid is in the public school system, it's in everyone's best interest that they are vaccinated.

I'm completely for it also and hope my state passes something similar.

I have heard the argument that kids who suffer seizures after receiving their vaccines will not be able to be exempt from the mandate though, and that that is why some are against the passing of the bill. Plus the implication that the government can make other mandates about individual's health choices.

I have honestly never met someone who was against vaccinations who was fully educated on the subject. One of my best friends is one and we can't have a conversation about the subject because I just end up laughing at her responses. Anti-vaxxers don't seem to understand they put the rest of our children at risk. I for one am extremely happy this law passed and have had a hard time biting my tongue on Facebook when any anti-vaxxers post about it. Like move out of state then, see ya! Also, if you can't find a pediatrician that agrees with you on the subject of not vaccinating is that not a sign?! They spent how long becoming pediatricians to properly take care of your child and you think your few hours of Internet research (by the way everything you read on the Internet is true

Any child who has an allergy to a certain vaccine, or has immune system issue can be exempt. A doctor can still say you can not vaccinate your child. The law got rid of people being able to not vaccinate their children due to "religious or personal beliefs" unless they choose to home school.

As a Californian myself I am very happy that the Gov. signed this bill especially with what I have been through with my pregnancy.
I found out after my first trimester blood tests that despite having had all vaccinations up until this point in my life my body did not build up or keep any antibodies against ckicken pox or measles. Needless to say this was very scary news in the middle of the measles outbreak, and to compound my risk I work with public school children.
My doc was so concerned about the risk to myself and the baby that she gave me a very strict list of requirements to take to my work requesting a list of any student I may come into contact with that was not vaccinated and said I could actually have them removed from school.
It is still sacry to think that I am still at risk eventhough I have had all of my vaccinations, but signing this bill is another step in the right direction I think to help keep everyone a little bit safer and healthier.

@chrissynbrian I went through this too! I just got my license transferred to my new state so I was going to start subbing first since I was pregnant.. Doctors found I had the same problem with no immunity and I couldn't do it! So scary!

Yeah, we really had no idea that you could have had vaccinations all these years, but still not have any immunity. So gald we did the full spectrum of tests and found out.

I am so torn on the debate. I feel like there should never be s forced health care decision but I also feel that parents who don't vaccinate are irresponsible and those kids shouldn't be allowed in school.

For me it's not about the vaccines, I'm annoyed at the bill because I feel that no medical decision ever be forced or mandatory. A lot of people are going to either be forced to vaccinate, homeschool, or move. Just my opinion.

So therefore you have other options. In order to attend public school the kids need to be up to date on all vaccinations and physicals. Don't agree with it? You need to find another option. Private schools have run this way for ages.

But I mean all the anti vax community believes they are smarter than doctors anyways so I don't see why they want their kids to go public schools. If they are so smart and educated they can teach their kids on their own.

If the government can force you to vaccine a child, they've opened up a whole new world of things they can theoretically force law abiding citizens into. It sounds a lot like Austria right before WWII. Where does it end? Unwanted medical treatments? Sterilization? Euthanasia? Forced abortions? It is a slippery slope, no matter how good the intentions behind it may be.

So it's not okay to go into a government building with a gun because it can hurt and kill people but telling parents that they have to have their vaccinations to go into a government building because it can hurt and kill people is equivalent to nazi Germany. You want to fly on an airplane? You have to go through the proper screenings or you don't fly.

If you want your kids to go to public schools you vaccinate them or you need to find another alternative. The government is not holding down your child and injecting them. You as the parent still have A choice. You just have to deal with consequences.

This is disrespectful to the actual human beings who suffered in nazi-occupied Austria and the people who were forced to undergo sterilization in the U.S. In the 1920s.

No one is being forced to do anything. If you want your child to go to government-run school then, yeah, you have to meet certain requirements, or choose not to go. But to compare this to crimes against humanity is just awful.

I'm not sure why people act like its totally unprecedented for he government to create incentives for people to do things, or even to force people to do things in some cases. Things the government already forces you to do include sending your children to school, paying taxes, having health insurance, building handicap accessible ramps on your business, living in a house that's up to code, not smoking in bars and restaurants. This doesn't even touch upon the government services that you are "forced" to pay for through your taxes. The government encourages or forces people to do things all the time.

People made the same argument about ObamaCare. It's completely specious. Check out Article 1, Section 8 of the Constitution (and the correlating section of every state constitution).

I feel like you're just throwing the holocaust out there as a scare tactic. What an absurd argument. Now, if the government were insisting that only Jews or gay people or black people get vaccinated before going to public schools, THAT would be Hitler-esque. Fortunately, it would also violate the 14th amendment.
