February 2016 Moms

What are your must have baby products?

I'm a first time mother and a bit overwhelmed with all the baby products on the market. For all you moms that have had a baby before what are your MUST have baby and toddler products? I get the gist of needing a crib, swaddlers, car seat etc but what are the specific brands/types you like?

Thanks!

  • There really is very little on the essentials list. I have a couple suggestions though. If you are going to pump, get the microwave sterilizing bags. Less work. And if you want a wrap I loved my beco Gemini. It was a convenient way to get things done around the house when baby just wanted to be held, and great for going out too. I used it more than our stroller until my son didn't fit any more.
If you are not going to be co-sleeping another thing that I would suggest is seriously worth it is a video monitor. It is so nice to be able to see what is going on in the crib without having to walk in there.
  • Fisher Price rock-n-play and some sort of carrier. I used my moby wrap all the time when my guy was a newborn and then we graduated to an ergo. It was the only way I got stuff done when he was little.

  • Thanks for the info ladies!
  • Baby carrier/wrap, swaddler, and those baby pjs that are actually a gown, because no one wants to be messing with button/snaps in the middle of the night!
  • Oh yes, swaddle for sure! I love the miracle blanket for my guy and the a+a swaddle blankets.

  • One thing besides everything everyone mentioned that I found to be amazing was a diaper sprayer. They are normally used with cloth diapers, but we have used it a lot when we've had blowouts that get on LO's clothes. Its a sprayer that attaches to your toilet, so instead of rinsing poop into the sink/tub, you can spray it off right into the toilet.
  • I love having a boppy. I have big boobs and could never comfortably breast feed cross body, I was much more successful with the football hold for both boys and the boppy was really helpful for this. I also recommend a rock n play
  • Aden and anais swaddle blankets
    lil joeys newborn cloth diapers
Ameda truly yours Breast pump and lansinoh storage bags
    Extra large reusable nursing pads
A couple of good nursing bras without an underwire
Stretchy loose yoga pants for those first few weeks home when it feels like your pants are trying to kill you
Some kind of baby wearing device. I liked my k'tan.
    Britax b-ready/b-safe travel system combo.
A bassinet that doesn't require too much leaning and pulling yourself out of bed in case of a csection. My one splurge purchase on this baby is going to be the Bassinest, which swivels 360 degrees so you can pull it up over your bed and not have to climb out of bed every 2 hours to feed the baby (real torture after a csection).
  • Hands down a video monitor. We use it every single day!!

I gave up on CDing LONG ago, but I love my diaper sprayer for exactly that. :)

  • My friend gave me a homedics lullaby & sound spa sound machine (target). I was like 'who needs this' but thanked her profusely & put it on a shelf & forgot about it. After my daughter was born we tried everything to get her to calm down & sleep...all kinds of soothing sound toys, the noises on her swing, her pack n play, she was just crying. At 3am desperate for sleep I somehow remembered it, set it to 'ocean' and still use it to this day. My daughter is over 3 and turns it on herself. I have given it to several friends who have also thanked me as their kids won't sleep without it. And it plugs in so no batteries! We take it when we travel or visit friends & family too...it's a nightlight and a familiar comfortable sound in a strange place. After a few days using it her little baby eyes would droop closed at the sound of it. Highly recommended.
  • The rock n play was key for us for the first few months of sleeping. I also LOVE my baby jogger city mini GT. so easy to fold and great as a travel system. I also love Zutano booties for the first 6 months. They are the only things that stayed on my LO's feet. Lastly she has 2 wubanubs. These have been life savers!!!!!
  • Rock n Play Rock n Play Rock n Play.

    I cannot emphasize that enough!

  • Agreed... Rock N Play is a must. Besides that, a few sleep and plays, diapers and A&A swaddle blankets we don't use much for the first 3 months.

My first hated the swing but loved his bouncer. My other 2 hated the bouncer but loved the Fisher Price Swing. We only bought a new swing after DS2 fell right to sleep in it at my SIL's house and took a long nap. Every child is different.
  • My must haves for the newborn phase:
Rock N Play, wrap/SSC (I like the Tula), our BOB Revolution stroller, a swing, swaddle blankets (A&As are cute and soft but there are cheaper brands that do the trick), sleeping gowns, MyBrestFriend nursing pillow (I liked it more than the Boppy, we have both, but the MBF snaps around you), lots of tiny baby hats, and (SO IMPORTANT) receiving blankets to use as burp cloths. Our first kid spit up constantly and we went through like three or four a day, at least. Actual burp cloths are teeny, receiving blankets are soft flannel, super absorbent, and actually catch spit up on your shoulder. I always had one within arms reach in the first few months.

For yourself, if you're nursing: nipple cream, a big water bottle to have near you during nursing sessions, and nursing pads to slip inside your bra so you don't leak through your shirt all the time. :)

  • Would someone need a rock n'play AND a MamaRoo.... lots of people seem to swear by the MamaRoo but its a bit steep and seems to do the same thing?

I was just about to ask the same question - so funny. I want to register for both though --- just curious if that makes sense.

Also, I got an Orbit stroller free through work a couple years ago ... Anyone have the orbit? If so, how do you like? I also have the Quinny buzz but I'm giving that one to my mom to keep at her place for when she babysits. I wanted the fancier one- of course :)

  • Huge must have for me is my chair. I have a recliner in the nursury and it has been a total life saver. During my first pregnancy, once I hit my third teimester I could no longer get comfortable in my bed. I slept in my rocker/recliner for at least the last month of pregnancy. It is also a lot easier to feed the baby and rock him to sleep in my chair rather than the couch or my bed.
I sat in every chair in bru and buybuy baby until I found the one that was right for me.

Andplusalso, I love the a+a swaddling blanket
huggies swadlers are the only diaper that work for my DS
  • After two babies here are my must haves. Ring sling/wrap, cosleeper, a+a swaddle blankets, ergo, and lots and lots of burp cloths.
  • If you live near even a small city... Get on their kid swap and sell page (usually either FB or a yahoo group, etc). That way, you can buy used stuff to try out.... Everyone is different (and so is your baby!). We bought a crib and never used it as we ended up co-sleeping! We never had a swing (I don't like the idea of sticking my baby in a contraption to calm them)....but I could not have survived without one of those exercise balls!!! Calmed her every time. Other must haves people have written that I agree:

    First months we loved these!
    -muslin swaddles, miracle blanket
-easy to reach in co-sleeper, etc (something portable?) for naps
-exercise ball (I'm writing it a second time!)
    -wrap or other infant carrier
    -nursing pads
-portable changing pad/diaper bag (we ended liking a small backpack best--and sold our real diaper bag)

    Later!
-SSC (soft structured carrier) baby carrier. Tula is awesome but $$, ergo good option. Hubbies like this, too.
    -good stroller!

We cloth diaper and love it if anyone has questions!?!
