Baby Names

Sister for Nora and Oliver

Hi! I'm 28 weeks pregnant with a girl and we're not very close to figuring out a name for her.  Our DD's name is Nora and DS's name is Oliver so we need something classic to go with them.
So far we agree on these, but I'm not sure I'm in love with them yet:

Clara
Grace
Sarah
Kate (we don't like Katherine though)

I love Elsie but there's the Borden cow association, although I had no idea that was the cow's name until I fell in love with the name! And it sounds like a little kid's name to me so I think it would be a good nickname.  I'm not a fan of Elizabeth.  Could it be short for something else?  (I love Elise too but it's my cousin's name)

Other names we like but that are currently used for cousins, pets, etc include: Amelia, Stella, Ruby, Maisie, and Elise.  We like Sophia, Charlotte, and Lilly too but I think their too popular.

Any suggestions?  Thanks so much!

I really shouldnt read posts so quickly that I miss things. If you think Lily is too common, herr are some other L names which could lend themselves to initials LC, nn Elsie:

    Lola
    Lucy
    Laura / Lauren / Laurel
    Lorraine
    Lana
    Lorelei
    Lynn
    Leah
    Leanne
    Lisa

  • Elouise. Could be an Elsie!

I know an adult Elsa- Elsie could be a kiddie name for an Elsa

    Lydia
    Phoebe
    Camilla
    Freya
    Sadie
    Marie
    Heidi
    Martha
    Adele
    Georgina

  • In thinking of how the kids' names would sound altogether i ruled out the names also ending with an "ah" sound. I feel like Kate is so simple next to Oliver and Nora. I like Grace the best. :)

  • First, LOVE Nora and Oliver- great names! Of your list, I like Clara and Grace the best- lovely!

Elsie is cute and I didn't even think of the cow. It is sometimes a nn for Elspeth or Eloise.

  • I absolutely love Clara ("Clara Grace" would have a nice ring to it), but I think "Clara and Nora" are kind of awkward to say together.  I like Kate but not as a stand-alone name -- maybe Kaitlyn could be an option?

Elsie could be a cute nickname for Elizabeth, or Elysia (which looks like a trendy name but is actually an old name that means "Elysian Fields" . . . and as an added bonus, your daughter would share a name with Paris's most famous street!).

Really, Elsie could be a nickname for quite a few girls names beginning with an "E." Keep in mind that many traditional nicknames bear very little resemblance to the original name (ex. Jack for John, Maggie for Margaret), so I wouldn't feel compelled to limit yourself only to names starting with "Els."
  • Clara is a little close to Nora. What about just Claire? Sarah is also too close IMO. Grace is lovely. Just Kate doesn't work for me unless it's a MN. Not a fan of Elsie.
  • I agree that Clara and Nora are too similar. I love Claire, especially with your sibset. Love Grace too.

    Suggestions:
    Lilah
    Ivy
    Juliet
    Joy
  • I like Elise better than Elsie. How about Libby?

    Elowen
    Camille / Camilla
    Ruby
    Alice

  • I love Clara. We are having a boy, but if he were a girl I was definitely considering that one.

Have you considered Madeline? It's classic but beautiful. It also has a great nickname - Maddie!
  • Thanks for the suggestions!  I really like Audrey and Madeline and will add them to our list!  I like some of the other suggestions too but they've already been vetoed by DH (Violet, Adele, Rosalie)!  We always have a hard time agreeing on names!  Any other suggestions are appreciated too :)
