Help - breastfeeding for comfort and won't sleep

My little one is 8 weeks and wants to breastfeed for hours at night. She will fall asleep many times but wake up only a few minutes later and freak out if the nipple is gone. She won't sleep in a bassinet or rock and play so we are co-sleeping. She won't take a pacifier either. I'm a first time mom and desperate to get her to sleep easier. She's terribly fussy all night and cries and cries if I don't breastfeed. I have thrush and really need a break from hours of feeding before bed. Help please!

  • I would try a few different types of pacifiers maybe? I know the mam is good for breastfeeding moms. Hope it gets better!

  • Do you pump at all? My baby is 7 weeks and he was also waking up every hour or hour and half at night to breastfeed. I started to pump to give him bottles of breast milk instead and problem solved. His belly gets fuller faster (he is currently getting 5 oz per feeding - he is a big boy) and he doesn't fall asleep like he does at my breast. With the bottle I also make sure he gets a certain amount of milk. Now I get 3 hour stretches at night.
  • I'm in the same boat, and am trying a natursutten pacifier.  LO seems to like it so far, but I've just started using in the last day or so.  I've read good things about them for breastfeeding babies.

I was having that problem too. Now I cluster feed sort of and she has been sleeping at least 5 hours, last night almost 7. I feed her from the breast around 6, then my husband gives her a bottle (I pump in the morning after I feed her) around 7:30ish of about 3 oz and then I feed her again around 9 and most nights she falls asleep right after that and will sleep anywhere from 2:30 to 5:00. My dr said that giving her a bottle will allow my supply to increase between the cluster feedings so she has a fuller tummy to go longer. She will be a month old tomorrow.

  • I know they say to avoid bottles, but I do give my LO a bottle of pumped milk she. He does this. I cluster feed if he wants to until about 10 pm and then give a bottle if he is still wanting to be at the breast. Haven't noticed my supple dropping at all.
  • Thanks for the advice. I'll try the bottle and see if we can have a smoother transition to bed.
