Bogusly Pissed!

edited June 2015 in October 2015 Moms
I am ANGRY! I took off work early to go aee MFM... My appointment was at 4, I got there like at 3:35... The tech took me in and got my ultrasound done... It was about 4:10'ish... I waited til 4:45 nobody came in... So I walked out of my appt... X( I called back and said I left, the lady snapped on me And said your appointment is at 4, it was 10 of 5. I told her If the dr has anything important to tell me, he can call me... I know I am impatient... Just had a rough day!

  • Yeah lol! I couldnt copy and paste my rant! Lol
  • I would have at least asked someone before leaving what the hold up was, my place will drop me if I miss more than 3 appointments without notice for any reason... emergencies come up and there are sometimes things that need done especially in a business that involves something that is spontaneous and can change in an instant like labor and babies. Sorry you had to wait.

  • I was already done with my ultra sound just waiting for the doctor.... But nobody came in and said anything... So I got fed up and left... It was just me... If the lady said we were backed up or something she was like your appointment is at 4... Well it is almost 5... I hate going there...
  • I'd be annoyed to but I don't have the balls to leave
  • I know I shouldn't have... It was a selfish act on my part...
  • Good for you! I did that too once. I hate being kept waiting for appointments, and there's no excuse. 20 mins is my max and even then I make sure to say something to someone. Our ultrasound place is the worst. When the wait starts creeping up I go stand in front of the receptionist and ask every few minutes how long it's gonna be.
  • Thanks for understanding @Telebell I know but it was selfish on my part... If someone would've said we are behind or we have only 1 doctor, etc etc I wouldn't be as upset... The drive isnt that close either it was 1/2 hr-45 min...depending on traffic... When I left and called her and told her I left, she had an attitude and said your appointment was at 4... Well it is 10 of 5... I will be more patient next time. I have to remember it isn't ALL about me...
  • Ug, my docs are always behind, at least an hour or 2. At my perinatal specialist the other day, it was 1.5 hours. And since they didn't see all they wanted, they are going to have to "squeeze" me in on July 6th, so we know what that means. Going to be there half the damn day.

  • No disrespect @amandaRN03, but I notice that my doctor is constantly overbooked. And I know things fall behind, esp at the OB with emergency C's and what not. But when it happens like every single time you go in, it does start to get frustrating.

I've been trying to keep my cool more lately...my mother says this baby is bringing out the adult in me :) But I've been asking myself, what am I hoping to accomplish by saying/doing this? If it's just to express my opinion or displeasure and not anything constructive, I've been holding my tongue a little more frequently. In that vein, the MDs, RNs, and receptionists are more than likely doing their collective best. In most cases our reaction as a patient (in the moment) will do nothing to hurry the process up. And now you have to reschedule and go back, right? Maybe address the issue when you call to schedule the next appointment instead of peacing out.
  • Well...I would have let someone know I was leaving, but there is no excuse for them not informing you that they were behind and asking for your patience. Not doing so is simply bad business practice. Of course doctor's offices run behind. It comes with the nature of their business; no big deal. The issue lies in how they handle it. My doctor was called out to deliver a baby when I was waiting at one of my appointments. He ran into my room to make sure I didn't have any questions I couldn't ask the nurse, apologized, and reminded me that one day soon it would be me he was rushing away to see at the hospital. He has also popped in to apologize for delays and assured me he would be in soon. That is the professional way to handle delays in my opinion. It doesn't even have to be the doctor. A nurse, assistant, or receptionist could pop in and let you know what's going on. So, I'm with you in that I would be angry as well!
  • Another option that works for me is booking appts for first thing in the morning only.  There's only so far behind you can be when you're the first or second patient.  I get being a bit late- I have clients in my line of work too.  But it's just totally unacceptable to be more than 15-20 minutes late.  And for multiple appointments?  That means someone's doing the scheduling wrong.  It's a huge pet peeve of mine, because it's an indication that the practice doesn't value my time the way they expect me to value theirs.  I'm sure I'd get reprimanded for being late for them.
  • I saw this post and I got angry for you. Like you said. The least they could have done is explained the hold up.

My ob office has a sign outside the main office door that lists when a doctor is behind or on time. And it's updated every time a nurse calls someone's name. I can't get mad if I know.

But I do understand the frustration. Pregnancy or not.
  • Thanks guys! When I left the office, I called right away... Literally outside the door and it was locked. All the receptionist said was "Your appointment is at 4" um hello, it is 10 of 5... no explaination nothing... I came earlier than my scheduled time. And I saw their staff sitting in another room just sitting there... I am just going to suck it up... Just 3 more appointments with Maternal Fetal Medicine! And their staff seems miserable too...:/
  • I had my first OB appt on Tuesday. She delivered both of my sons so this is my third time having her as my OB. My appt was at 2pm. She got called to do 2 deliveries while I was there and I didn't get in until almost 4:30. 45 mins doesn't seem that long of a wait to me. But our healthcare in Canada is free so I guess I can't complain about waiting.
  • Thanks everyone... This was Maternal Fetal Medicine not my OB... My OB is pretty good... And my OB nurse is awesome...
  • Someone besides the doc could have came and told you the doc was running behind instead of just leaving you in limbo. Communication, folks. Of course stuff happens, but don't leave us hanging in our undies on an exam table and whatnot!!!
  • I understand that some offices can get behind and that just about anything can come up with patients that can delay a doctor. I have encountered some offices that are ALWAYS like this, though. I am sorry, but if every one of your patients is taking longer than the scheduled time, the schedule needs to be reworked to allow for more time with each patient.

I learned really quickly with my old OBs office to only schedule one of the first few appointments of the day because by the afternoon they were so backed up it would be at least and hour wait.

I know this is a bit of a different situation, but I also feel like if they are running more than an hour behind, they should be calling patients with appointments later in the day to allow them to plan accordingly, or not penalize the patient if they are not able to wait in the office for hours on end.
  • Thanks for all the feedback! It is a new day and I am moving forward... :) gotta do it for my peanut :) Just gotta be patient and better! :)

I have an understanding that doctors offices run behind but when in general conversation with other patients in the waiting room I find out that there are 3 booked at the same time (this isn't my ob office) I know there is a problem. Overbooking and understaffing leads to long waits. It is at least expected for a nurse or someone to check on the waitig patient every so often to give them an update
  • I am a veterinarian and totally understand what it's like to get behind. That being said I feel like my profession does a WAY better job at communicating with our clients. If my clients have to wait, someone at least pops their head in and apologizes and gives them a rough estimate of how much longer, or offers them to leave their pet or reschedule. I've had an issue with my doctors office taking 2-3 days to call me back about a rash on my belly. I know it was not an emergency, but I don't leave for the night until I've called and addressed the concerns of the clients that have called that day. I also do a full exam on all my patients each time they visit, because I don't feel right charging an office visit without performing an exam. I've had to wait over an hour before to have the ob spend 2 minutes with me. It is totally frustrating. The human healthcare system needs an overhaul. There needs to be compassion and respect for other people's time. Side note- my brother in law has been out of work and in serious pain with a slipped disc for 2.5 weeks, he still has another few days before seeing the specialist and probably another few before potential surgery. If he were a dog, he would be at least a week post-op by now!
  • I am usually seen in a fairly timely manner at my appointments. For my last appointment I waited in the waiting room for over an hour. I then got a room and waited another 45 minutes. You never know what could be going on with another patient. I've been the one to delay the doctor in the past. I wouldn't want to be rushed through an appointment where I was receiving bad news or less than ideal test results. It's frustrating, but I try to be understanding of what someone else might be going through.
  • There is a chance, slight, that they may have forgotten you were waiting in the room. Those places are busy as hell and maybe they thought they had come in to see you and hadn't. It's not okay, but we're all human and mistakes happen. I wouldn't have left without talking to them, what if there had been an issue with your scan and they were looking for a consult? Sure they could have let you know they were working on it but again, mistakes happen, people lose track of time. I get your frustration but leaving really only affected you.
  • My results came back fine. I did call and let them know I left. Their door was locked. The receptionist said with an attitude your appointment is at 4... I said it was almost 5. When I walked out I saw a room full of their staff. Yeah I couldve handled it better...but what's done is done... Lesson learned... I am going to be better for the sake of our baby... That is a promise!
  • My perinatologist appt was supposed to be 1 hour and ended up being about 3 hours. There were issues discovered and the dr was very thorough and sat down explaining everything to us, showing us the issues, giving statistics, giving us options, and performing additional testing.

I understand being frustrated at waiting, but maybe be a little grateful your not the patient that the dr has to spend 3x the amount of time allotted for the appointment.

  • I appreciate everyone's comments but like I said, I am over it... And it was a lesson Learned... I promised myself to be patient and never do ot again... It was a selfish move on my part...
  • A good office who cares about people's time and sanity takes steps to make wait times less. I use to go to an office that would call you if they were running behind. I do not like being late and so it's the worse feeling if you hussle to make it in on time only to be told "we are running an hour beind".
