Cloth diapering

We are planning on transitioning to cloth diapers at home. We have been using disposables up until now. If you are cloth diapering, when did you transition? When he or she reached a certain weight? I am planning on using AIO cloth diapers. Baby girl is 8.5 lbs and 5 weeks! TIA!

Re: Cloth diapering

  • We've been using cloth diapers since we brought DD home from the hospital. We are using pre-fit cloth diapers through a diaper service, which has been great!

We have also been using a cloth diaper service since birth. Both kids. Ours delivers profolds to our porch once a week and we use our own covers. We line a pedal lid trash can with the bag they came in and that's where we put the dirties, then that bag gets put on the porch for pick up at the same time the new ones are dropped off. So easy. The covers we use until they get poop on tHem and then they get thrown in the hamper to be washed with the rest of the kids' clothes. We have about a half dozen covers for each kid, which is more than enough because I do their laundry every other day. Once you get in a rhythm it's just as easy as disposables.

Have you decided on which kind you'll use?

ETA: I just reread and saw you'll be using AIOs. I've never used them but have friends that do and they seem pretty easy.

  • Oh - I also wanted to add that we use disposables at night. Both of my kids pee through cloth with the longer sleep stretches at night and I always thought doubling up would be uncomfortable, so disposable.

  • I started at one week of age, after my LO's circumcisian site healed. We don't use a service and I do laundry every 2-3 days. It hasn't been bad at all and I really love doing the cloth! We use pockets because of the cost of the AIOs and the fact that the AIOs take quite a bit longer to dry. I know that BumGenius AIOs are supposed to fit after 8 lbs though!
  • My 5 wk old is in disposables still. We used cloth after hubby got pooped on but now we notice baby still pees out the side of his diaper. Don't know if the absorbency got changed from the wash (they are used) but we go back and forth and like disposables for travel or middle of the night changes. I have a whole drawer full of cloth diapers I plan to use but his legs are pretty scrawny even though he's 9 lbs. mostly I want to use up all the disposable diapers people gave us too before switching. I was hoping it was earlier but oh well!
  • We started using our stash of cloth at 3 weeks and are using a mix of AIO and pockets. Like them both but love that the pockets can be a little trimmer right now since you can decide what inserts to use.

We started cloth diapering at two weeks of age. We have a small selection of pockets and all in twos (one size) and I have to say they did fit her quite well. She was just over 8lbs at the time. I just started putting her in them during the days we were at home while still putting her in disposables at night and for going out. Now that we are a bit more comfortable with them we only use disposables at night (because we can go from 10pm -6am without a diaper change that way).
We are still refining our system at home and going out, but overall it has been a pretty good transition!!
  • Still waiting for lo to be big enough to wear the cloth diapers I bought (Bum Genius and Flips).  I didn't get newborn cloth diapers, thinking I'd likely only need newborn sizes a week or two...five weeks later, and not there yet!  :)
  • Thank you all so much! I am planning on using Charlie banana brand of AIO and they do have an adjustable for the leg part so it can be more snug for a newborn but not sure if I want to make the jump yet! I think like pp said I'll start at home and continue with disposable at night and out. Thanks for your feedback!
  • @CanadaMom17 glad to know we aren't the only ones with that situation! I spent so much money and have a dresser drawer full of cloth diapers. I guess we'll just have to plump up baby to fit them hehe
  • My baby was a born a big boy so even though I had a newborn stash we barely used it because he outgrew it fast. I only cloth diapered him here and there at two weeks old since I'm a FTM and didn't know what I was doing lol. We transitioned at 5 weeks old to cloth diapers during the day but we also use disposables at night or when we go out.
  • How old were your babies when they went into the cloth diapers?
  • We started after we used up the disposables from the hospital... We've been using prefolds and covers and have a handful of fitteds too, newborn GMD workhorses and one size baby kicks Organics. We used disposables at night for about another week or two but then I got tired of just throwing away money (especially if she'd pee in one before I ever got her dressed...) I did just order some AIOs from a co-op so we'll see how I like those too. It might be worth it to buy some newborns still, a lot go up to 12 or 14 lbs and will help you get a better fit now!
  • I have been using Charlie banana size xs stuff cloth since 2 weeks and I used g baby newborn size and xs from birth and then since two weeks. He is now 2months and still going strong we use them all the time except we went on a camping trip so I bought the disposable liners for the g baby diapers and they are awesome!
  • After the circumcision healed, we started using our Bumgenius newborns and bottom bumpers size ones. Our all in one stash for when he gets bigger is full of Bumgenius freetime and elementals, one size bottom bumpers, and blueberry simplex all in ones. We currently do diaper laundry twice a week for our toddler and about 2-3 times for our 5 week old
  • My LO was born at 6lb so even our newborn stash didn't fit her until she was three weeks old which is when we started cloth diapering full time
