Does anyone know what is the best type of mattress to buy for a baby? I was thinking a soft mattress but my husband thinks we need to get a foam stiff type one.
I believe they recommend firm mattresses for infants to lower the SIDS risk. The mattresses I have for my babies is firm on one side for infants and softer on other for toddlers - but I have never used the softer side - they don't really get softer mattresses until we convert their beds to big kid beds (we go straight from crib to full size, bypassing the toddler bed)
Definitely firm. The foam ones are nice cause they are easier to life for the frequent sheets changes, but coil ones are fine too as long as it is a firm mattress.
Agree with PP, firm! It's even hard to find one in the stores that feel firm enough. Someone bought us the one off our registry. It's a Sealy and has great reviews. $70
We were told by the hospital to make sure the mattress is firm or firm. While baby's been in your water bed tummy for 9 months, they would sleep on anything after but to reduce risk of SIDS they said to make sure it's firm.
I used to get in the crib with DS (eye roll, I know) and the two sides feel about the same to me. If you find a cheaper, firm, newborn matress that doesn't have to toddler side, if say go for it.
We got the Pricey.. Naturepedic organic infant/toddler mattress. It was expensive, but if you splurge on this piece of baby gear, I feel that it will help YOU sleep better in the long run! They sleep well, you sleep well! I did the same with my first and she slept like a champ. From early on, she slept through the night at around 2-3 months and she was EBF! We all slept good in our house.
