3rd Trimester

Gestational diabetes

my sugars were a little high on the one hour glucose test and then back down to normal on 2 hr test. Now I have seen a dietician and have to check my sugars. It appears the trend is at the hour mark post food I am a little higher then they like. I am managing my carbs keeping within the limits and may have to go on insulin. My concern is the Dr told me today that they may need to induce me at 38 wks and now I have to have follow ups every 2 wks. I now have 3 more ultrasounds which I guess is a good thing as the one I had in March when I wa to find out gender the babe had legs crossed. I'm just worried that I won't be able to deliver at my small local hospital and that baby will have to be poked and prodded with needles Has anyone else been going thru this. I have 12 weeks to go. Well 10 if I get induced early and what are concerns re early induction. Thx

Re: Gestational diabetes

  • Sorry to hear about your test.  I had mine done Thursday morning and haven't heard anything from the doc. They told me no news is good news.  I had a friend that tested positive and had to completely change her diet and take insulin.  Just trust your doctor.  As much as it sucks we have to remember that they are doing what's best for our little ones, and for us.

  • I have GD and my OB does not induce early because ultrasounds have a large margin of error. Sometimes +- 1.5 lbs. If the baby is in distress or something happens because of being high risk, I may need a c-secrion. But she said that would be week 38 at the earliest. I have ultrasounds every 4 weeks and see my OB every 2 weeks. I am 29 weeks currently. I would make sure you voice all the questions/concerns you may have. Check with your delivering hospital as well to be sure. And try to just enjoy the extra peeks at your LO.

My friend with GD was induced at 39 weeks but it was because of the medication she was on, not the baby's size. Apparently extended exposure to the medication isn't great for the baby. If you're unmedicated and managing it through diet alone, I don't see why you'd need to be induced.

Fwiw at her scan 3 days before induction she was told the baby was "at least 8lbs" and she came out at 6.12. So scans aren't always even close to accurate.
  • I'm on insulin because I refused to take a class c medication during pregnancy. I have weekly ultrasounds and nst starting next week. Induction has never been brought up.
  • I have had GD with 4 pregnancies and they usually start with a drug called glyburide and talk about induction if the baby seems to be getting to big. A pregnant mom with GD is also at risk for higher amniotic fluid levels which they don't like. Good luck
  • I'm 28 weeks pregnant and it my first my brother and sister has type 2 diebetes and I have been diagnosed with GD thought this pregnancy and have to do a finger prick after every meal! Which I find that my bloods are fine. Have no idea of being induce or any part in pregnancy although it been a roalcaoster! Finger cross I go stright to date!
