Is there anyone in this group who had a vanishing twin and is considering a harmony screening test? I might have had a vanishing twin, after a week of bleeding on my 6 weeks they saw a second empty sac in the US. The doc said it was either a vanishing twin or just the uterus bleeding. I'm 9wks 5days now and my second US showed the sac was gone. I was so looking forward to having a harmony screening test, but I was told by the genetics lab that they wouldn't do that for me because of the high chance of false negative that might be due to the possibly vanishing twin. The not being able to know if the baby is OK is having me so worried specially because this is my first and I had a previous MC. Has anyone else done the harmony test? or had a vanishing twin? how are you dealing with the stress? Thank you for any comments you might have.
Re: Harmony screening test after vanishing twin
It is true about testing, it would show a false positive, and sometimes the sex is not accurate either bc it can pick up DNA cells from the vanished twin. I feel you...every day I worry about my remaining baby, wondering if it's ok in there. A good thought is, usually the remaining baby does really well bc they were the dominant one to begin with. Usually they are the ones that were receiving more of the blood and nutrients than the other, which is why the other could've vanished. I keep telling myself that this one is strong, which is why it survived! You could request a 12 week sono from your provider...sometimes they will make exceptions for this, just so you can see the little one moving and do an overall anatomy scan (even though it will still be really small). Another option is an amniocentesis, but this is a riskier test and is an invasive test. If you really need a peace of mind, an amniocentesis is the ONLY diagnostic testing there is. Hang in there! In a few more weeks, you'll be feeling your little one moving! I'm literally counting down the days to my 2nd tri, where I can feel like I'm outta the red zone!!
